Why Do We Dye Easter Eggs?

Easter egg dyeing has no single proven origin. Its meanings combine older symbols of renewal, Christian resurrection imagery, Lenten customs and regional traditions.

We dye Easter eggs because eggs have come to represent life and renewal, while Christians have also connected them with Jesus’s tomb and resurrection. In some parts of Christian Europe, eggs were avoided during Lent and welcomed back at Easter. These strands help explain the custom, but no single origin for coloring Easter eggs is established.

What does an Easter egg symbolize?

Eggs have symbolized life, renewal and rebirth in many cultures. That association predates their role in Christian Easter celebrations, and decorated eggs have appeared in settings unrelated to Easter. The Library of Congress’s account of egg decoration discusses a decorated egg found in a fourth-century tomb in Worms, Germany; it is evidence of an older decorative practice, not proof of the first Easter egg.

For many Christians, the egg offers an image of new life: its shell suggests a tomb, and the life associated with the egg evokes resurrection. This is a religious interpretation of the symbol, rather than evidence that all egg-decorating customs began for the same reason.

How did eggs become part of Easter?

Lent and the return of eggs

In some medieval Christian communities, people did not eat eggs during Lent. Their return at Easter made them a fitting celebratory food and gift. English Heritage and the University of Dayton’s Marian Library describe this connection. It helps explain the timing of eggs at Easter, but does not establish that fasting caused people to start dyeing them.

Medieval evidence and an uncertain beginning

The Glencairn Museum identifies the earliest written evidence it discusses linking decorated eggs with Christian Easter as medieval. The record points to a custom that developed over time, drawing on egg symbolism, Christian meaning, fasting and feasting, and local practice—not one documented moment of invention.

What about Mary Magdalene and the red egg?

An Eastern Orthodox tradition tells that Mary Magdalene presented an egg to the Roman emperor Tiberius and that it turned red. Versions differ on whether the egg was initially white or already red. The story gives red eggs a Christian meaning in that tradition, but it is not a verified historical account of how egg dyeing began. The United Methodist Church’s explanation of Easter traditions explicitly notes that the origin of coloring and decorating eggs is uncertain.

How Easter egg customs differ by region

Tradition Meaning or context Decoration or use
Greek and other Orthodox customs Red eggs are associated with Orthodox Christian practice. In Greece, people may tap eggs against one another in a game. Library of Congress
Ukrainian pysanky A Ukrainian tradition that predates Christianity and became associated with Easter over time. Wax-resist decoration builds patterns through successive dye baths. UNESCO; The Metropolitan Museum of Art
British pace eggs Local Easter customs; “pace” derives from “paschal,” meaning Easter. Colorful hard-boiled eggs were traditionally given as presents and used in local celebrations. English Heritage
Pennsylvania German and American customs Immigrant communities brought Easter egg practices to Pennsylvania from the eighteenth century onward; later customs blend sacred and secular spring celebrations. Practices vary. Glencairn Museum

These examples are not interchangeable: Christians do not all dye eggs, use the same colors, or assign them identical meanings. A simple dyed egg and a pysanka, for example, are different practices, even though both involve color.

How are Easter eggs decorated?

Simple dyeing

For a straightforward activity, English Heritage describes dye baths using water, vinegar and colorants, including food-coloring paste for blue or green eggs and onion skins for orange. It recommends refrigerating eggs after preparation; those instructions are not a complete food-safety guide. Follow current food-safety guidance for handling, cooking and storing eggs.

Wax-resist pysanky

Pysanky is a more elaborate Ukrainian art tradition, not simply another name for dyed Easter eggs. The maker applies wax to parts of the shell that should keep their current color, then dips the egg in dye. Repeating the wax and dye stages builds a layered design, often progressing from lighter to darker colors. A kistka is a tool for drawing fine wax lines. UNESCO describes the tradition and process in its pysanka overview; the Metropolitan Museum of Art also explains the technique in its 2022 exhibition account.
