Adar looks different in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 because the role was recast: Joseph Mawle played him in Season 1, and Sam Hazeldine took over in Season 2. The change is a casting change, not a documented change to Adar’s identity within the story.
Who plays Adar in Season 2?
Sam Hazeldine plays Adar in Season 2, replacing Joseph Mawle, who portrayed the character in Season 1. Amazon’s Season 2 cast announcement lists Hazeldine among the new cast members.
Why did Joseph Mawle leave the role?
Mawle’s public explanation was that he wanted to explore other characters and worlds. In a statement reproduced by Radio Times, he said: “Though as an actor it remains my wish, my job description to explore new characters and worlds.” The statement does not point to a firing, dispute, or scheduling conflict.
How did Sam Hazeldine approach taking over?
Hazeldine described taking on Adar as “a pleasure” and credited both the writers and Mawle with creating the character’s Season 1 foundation. In an interview with ComicBook.com, he said: “I think that’s because it was such a rich character that’s been created by the writers and by Joseph in Season 1.”

Hazeldine also said he did not intentionally take Adar in a different direction, while acknowledging the visible difference between the performers: “But this was the opposite, so it was good to then take it forward, not necessarily in different direction and certainly not intentionally, but we don’t look alike, but it’s very clearly the same character.” He made that comment in an interview with BeautifulBallad.
Did Adar’s makeup or design change?
The confirmed explanation for the changed appearance is the new actor. The sources cited here do not establish whether makeup, prosthetics, lighting, or other visual-design choices also changed between seasons, so those should not be treated as confirmed causes.
