Popular culture also tends to frame successful women musicians as competitors for a single top spot, and that habit pulls the two names together. The available record does not show a feud between them. In a 2024 Vogue profile, Gaga said, “And I love Taylor Swift too,” while describing her support for contemporary women musicians.
What follows separates the three things that get mixed up in this question: the cultural pattern that makes comparison easy, the artistic overlap that makes it interesting, and the claims that the evidence does not support.
Why the pairing feels natural
Gaga and Swift arrived in the same commercial era, both built large followings through pop, and both have large, visible public personas. Journalists and fans often place artists of similar stature next to each other, and two women with overlapping audiences are an obvious pair. That structural overlap explains why the names appear together. It does not, by itself, explain why anyone would want to rank them.
The gendered-rivalry framing
The broader explanation most often offered comes from outside this specific pair. Music professor Tammy Kernodle of Miami University, speaking in a 2023 NPR report that Georgia Public Broadcasting republished, described an impulse to compare successful women and argued that women are often treated as though only one can occupy a top cultural position. Her remarks were made in answer to why Beyoncé and Swift were being compared. They are useful context for the wider pattern, but they are not a statement about Gaga.

Kernodle put the point this way:
“And I think it has a lot to do with the way in which, you know, we define artistry, we define acceptable space in certain social spheres, but also, in reference to music, whether women can be within the narrative.”
Swift has described the same pattern from the inside. In a 2014 TIME interview she objected to women celebrities being compared with one another, saying: “I refuse to buy into these comparisons, because you don’t see it happening to men.” Her remark was general. It did not name Gaga, and it should not be read as a reply to her.

What Gaga has said about Swift
The most direct statement on the relationship comes from Gaga. In the 2024 Vogue profile, she listed contemporary artists she supports and included Swift in that list with the words “And I love Taylor Swift too.” That is goodwill expressed on the record. It is not a window into their private dealings, and it does not rule out any difference in opinion that neither has voiced publicly.
Gaga has also objected to being reduced to comparisons, though not in a way that involves Swift. In a 2016 Vanity Fair article she addressed comparisons with Madonna. Those remarks show a broader discomfort with being slotted against other famous women, and they belong to a separate story from the Gaga–Swift question.

Where the comparison has artistic substance
A 2012 master’s thesis from Bowling Green State University, available through OhioLINK, offers a bounded academic comparison. It studies selected songs, lyrics, and music videos by Gaga, Swift, and Katy Perry, focusing on how each presents female sexuality and how audiences respond. Its conclusions apply to those chosen works, not to every era or song in either artist’s catalog, and it does not crown a winner.
If you want to compare the two artists on their work, the thesis suggests four dimensions to test each claim against specific songs:

- Video and visual persona: How do performance, styling, and staging change what the song means?
- Sexuality and femininity: What is being presented, and how might different viewers read it?
- Audience identification: What values or identities might listeners find in each presentation?
A comparison built on named tracks and one of these dimensions will be more defensible than a general verdict on which artist is better or more important.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the sources do not establish
- No feud. Comparison chatter is not evidence of conflict, and the direct statement from Gaga points the other way.
- No single trigger. None of the sources identifies an event that started a current wave of comparisons between these two artists.
- No measured frequency. No published figure quantifies how often the pair is compared, how far those comparisons reach, or how fans feel about them.
These gaps matter because they limit the explanations you can responsibly give. The cultural-pattern explanation is plausible and supported by expert commentary, but it describes why women artists in general get paired off, not a documented cause specific to Gaga and Swift.
