The only direct statement about their romance comes from Lawson, who told TVLine that she and Olsen “wound up dating ‘for many years'” after that episode. That quotation confirms that the relationship happened and lasted a substantial period. It does not describe how it began, when it ended, or why.
What the sources do not establish
- The end date. Lawson’s interview does not give a breakup date.
- The reason. Neither Lawson nor Olsen has publicly explained the split in the coverage reviewed.
- Any named statistic or detail about the relationship. The available material is Lawson’s recollection and nothing more precise.
The dating timeline: what each source says
Some websites list specific years for the relationship. Those years come from secondary compilations, not from the people involved, so they should be read as unconfirmed.

Because the secondary sources disagree in framing and the only first-hand account gives no dates, the safest description is “after their 1999 ER episode, for many years.” Treat 2003–2006 as one site’s reported range, not as an established timeline.
Why the absence of an explanation is not evidence of a motive
When a relationship between two public figures ends without an explanation, readers often fill the gap with guesses about career demands, distance, conflict, or differing goals. None of those explanations appears in the material reviewed, and none can be attributed to either person. The accurate position is that the reason is not publicly known, which is different from saying there was a specific reason that has been kept hidden.

Until one of the two people speaks on the record about the split, the honest answer to why they broke up is that it has not been publicly explained.
