The character is Julie Pierce, played by Hilary Swank in The Next Karate Kid. The Cobra Kai creators say they explored bringing her back for the final season, learned early that it would not work out because of timing, and wrote the season without her. They did not say Swank turned the role down or explain her personal reasons.
What the creators said after the finale
In a post-finale interview published February 17, 2025, io9 (now part of Gizmodo) asked the Cobra Kai showrunners how close the series came to featuring Swank. Their answer centered on logistics rather than character. In that interview, Hayden Schlossberg said the creators explored their options, but they did not control actors’ schedules, and they learned fairly quickly that Swank’s return would not happen for the final season.
Schlossberg added that the story was not built to collapse if one performer could not take part. That point matters for reading the rest of the account: the creators were not describing a plot that had been designed around Julie and then had to be scrambled.
“We would have loved to have done it”
Jon Hurwitz said Julie was a character they would have liked to include. In his words: “I will say, yeah, with Julie Pierce, it was something that we would have loved to have done.”

“No lost episode out there”
Josh Heald addressed the idea that a Julie storyline had been filmed or written and then dropped. “And I’ll say there’s no lost episode out there.” He also said the creators had not gone deep enough into developing the relationship to have a complete storyline to discard. In his telling, the team tested the idea early: “We explored very early to just make that relationship and see if it was possible.” Then they moved on: “And we wrote knowing that.”
Why the timing decided it
The creators framed the obstacle as scheduling, not story. Because they could not guarantee a performer’s availability for the final season, the practical answer was to write around it once it became clear that Swank would not be part of the last run. The creators said the finished season worked creatively without Julie, and they were satisfied with it as made.

- From the iconic '80S film
- These figures show Daniel and Johnny in their Karate uniforms, ready to compete in the all-valley Karate championships
- Includes a trophy accessory, replica poster and floor mat
- Each fully articulated figure stands approximately 8" Tall and features an authorized likeness
Taken together, the interview describes a sequence: an early exploration of a Julie relationship, a fairly quick realization that a final-season return was not possible, and a writing process that proceeded with that knowledge. It does not describe a rejected script or a dropped arc.
What the 2018 canon comments add
Julie was on the creators’ radar long before the finale. In an early-series interview from 2018, Hurwitz said the creators treated Julie as part of the Karate Kid canon. He imagined Julie and Daniel knowing one another because both were important to Mr. Miyagi. At that point, he said the team had not reached out to Swank.

These two periods are easy to blur together, so the table below separates what each source covers.
| Period and source | What the creators said about Julie | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 early-series interview (/Film) | Julie belonged to the Karate Kid canon; she and Daniel could plausibly know each other through Miyagi. No outreach to Swank had yet occurred. | Any written return plot, or any decision about the final season. |
| February 17, 2025 post-finale interview (io9, now Gizmodo) | The creators explored a final-season return early, learned it would not happen because of scheduling, and wrote the season knowing that. No lost episode was made or discarded. | Swank’s personal reasons, or whether she was ever offered the role on the terms described. |
The two accounts are compatible. Canon status and creative interest do not guarantee an appearance, and a character can be part of a franchise’s world without a practical path onto the final season.

What the account does and does not establish
Established by the creators’ own statements
- The missing character is Julie Pierce, played by Hilary Swank in The Next Karate Kid.
- The creators explored a final-season appearance and learned early that it would not happen.
- They wrote the season knowing Julie would not appear, and they say no detailed storyline had to be rebuilt.
- They would have liked to include her.
Not established
- That Swank refused the role. The interview does not say she declined, and it does not disclose any reason on her side.
- That a specific Julie plot was written years in advance. The 2025 account describes an early exploration, not a developed arc.
- That Julie’s absence was a story-priority decision. The creators attributed it to timing. Any reading that the final season was too crowded to fit her is editorial interpretation, not the creators’ stated explanation. The Television Academy’s coverage of the finale noted the series’ broader recognition, including nine Emmy nominations, but that is context about the show, not evidence about Julie.
Where to check the source material
For the finale’s official framing, Netflix’s media page gives February 13, 2025 as the launch date of the Cobra Kai finale event and credits Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg as writers and executive producers: Netflix Media Center, “Cobra Kai”. The Television Academy’s February 21, 2025 feature, “Cobra Kai Creators on Why They Couldn’t Bring Back a Key Karate Kid Character”, covers the same question from the series-focus angle.
