The best-supported explanation is that intense media attention surrounding her relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr. made Bessette Kennedy’s press-facing work increasingly difficult. A 1996 Washington Post profile linked her departure to that conflict, quoting a colleague: “How can you talk to the press when you are avoiding the press?” That is a colleague’s explanation—not a statement from Bessette herself. The accounts available do not establish her precise private reasoning or prove that there was one exclusive cause.
What the contemporary account says
Bessette left Calvin Klein in spring 1996 after seven years with the company, according to a profile published by The Washington Post on October 8, 1996. The profile described the practical tension between her job and the public attention surrounding her relationship with Kennedy.
Paul Wilmot, identified in the article as a friend from their time at Calvin Klein and a Condé Nast vice president, put the problem this way: “How can you talk to the press when you are avoiding the press?” The remark is evidence of how a colleague understood the conflict; it is not a quote from Bessette.
When she left and what her job involved
The contemporaneous Washington Post account dates her departure to spring 1996. Biography.com later specifies March 1996. Bessette had worked at Calvin Klein for seven years and risen through celebrity sales and publicity work to director of show production, overseeing the designer’s fashion shows.

The Washington Post reported that her salary was in the low six figures. That is a contemporaneous reported figure, not independently verified payroll information.
Why media attention could affect the role
Her senior job involved fashion shows and press-facing responsibilities. As scrutiny of her relationship with Kennedy intensified, interacting with the press at work could collide with the couple’s efforts to keep their private lives out of public view. A 1999 CBS News report described Bessette as uncomfortable with media attention and noted the couple’s efforts to guard their privacy.

The available accounts do not provide a definitive first-person statement from Bessette naming why she resigned. The strongest claim supported by the contemporaneous reporting is narrower: a colleague connected her departure to the difficulty of doing press work while she was avoiding press attention.
