Beetlejuice Beetlejuice kills off Charles Deetz—Lydia’s father and Delia’s husband—for two connected reasons: Jeffrey Jones did not return amid his legal history, and Charles’s death gives the sequel a way to bring the Deetz family together and set its story in motion. TheWrap’s reporting on writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar presents both as part of the decision; it does not establish one as the sole explanation.
Who is the major original character who dies?
It is Charles Deetz, played by Jeffrey Jones in the 1988 Beetlejuice. Charles is Lydia’s father and Delia’s husband. In the sequel, his death has already happened by the time the main story begins, and the family gathers in response.

Why was Charles written out?
The production context
TheWrap reports that Jones’s legal history made bringing him back untenable. That context helps explain why the sequel does not feature the actor, but it should not be mistaken for a complete account of every consideration behind the story choice.
The story function
TheWrap also reports that director Tim Burton saw Charles’s death as a useful way to reunite the main characters and move the plot forward. Instead of finding a reason for the family to return to the old house, the film makes Charles’s death the event that brings them back.

How does Charles die in the story?
The film gives Charles an elaborate comic-horror death involving an airplane crash and a shark attack. Co-writer Miles Millar described the imagined death as “Tim’s personal nightmare of how he would not like to die,” according to TheWrap’s interview with Millar and fellow writer Alfred Gough. The grotesque treatment fits the movie’s macabre comedy while making the off-screen character’s fate part of the plot.

Charles’s death clears narrative space for the Deetz women—Delia, Lydia, and Lydia’s daughter Astrid—to carry the family story. Gough and Millar described the sequel as being about three generations of Deetz women. The family’s return to the old house brings those generations into the same story, rather than making the film chiefly about restoring the original cast.

Burton has described the sequel’s emotional starting point as asking what happened to Lydia, the Deetz family, and Charles after 35 years. In a 2023 BFI interview, he said: “What happened to Catherine? What happened to Charles? This is what interests me. This is what gives it an anchor for me. Where are these people after 35 years?” Charles’s absence, then, is also part of the sequel’s larger question about what time has done to the family.
