Rosie O’Donnell and Donald Trump’s public feud began in December 2006, after O’Donnell criticized Trump’s handling of the Miss USA controversy involving Tara Conner. Trump responded with personal attacks and said he was considering a lawsuit; O’Donnell challenged his business record and his authority to judge others. Their dispute flared up again in later television and political moments, most recently with Trump’s July 2025 threat to consider taking away O’Donnell’s U.S. citizenship after she moved to Ireland.

What started Rosie O’Donnell and Donald Trump’s feud?

The immediate trigger was Trump’s decision in December 2006 to let Miss USA Tara Conner keep her title if she entered rehab. Reports at the time alleged Conner had engaged in underage drinking, drug use and sexually explicit behavior. On The View, O’Donnell questioned Trump’s fitness to act as a moral authority, asking: “He’s the moral authority? Left the first wife, had an affair; left the second wife, had an affair; had kids both times, but he’s the moral compass for 20-year-olds in America?” CBS’s contemporaneous report recorded the exchange and its rapid escalation.

Trump answered with insults directed at O’Donnell and said he was considering suing her. The cited report describes a possible lawsuit, not a filed case. O’Donnell responded by questioning Trump’s business history and mocking his public persona. The argument was personal from the outset, but its stated subject was Trump’s response to Conner’s controversy and his public moral authority.

How the feud resurfaced over the years

2007: a separate The View conflict

Trump commented on O’Donnell’s departure from The View in 2007. Her departure followed a separate on-air dispute with cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck; that disagreement was not the original Trump-O’Donnell feud. A retrospective timeline tracks Trump’s comments and the intervening public exchanges.

2012: a brief friendly exchange

After O’Donnell had a heart attack, Trump tweeted, “Rosie, get better fast. I’m starting to miss you.” O’Donnell responded with surprise. It was a moment of apparent warmth, but it did not establish that their broader conflict had ended. The timeline records the exchange.

2014–2015: television and presidential politics bring it back

Trump initially praised O’Donnell’s return to The View, then criticized it. The old dispute returned to the political spotlight during the August 2015 Republican presidential debate. Asked by moderator Megyn Kelly about derogatory comments he had made about women, Trump replied, “Only Rosie O’Donnell.” Kelly pointed out that he had disparaged other women as well. The Associated Press’s debate report covers the exchange.

O’Donnell later described Trump’s presidential campaign as “a nightmare,” according to an Associated Press report. The debate retort linked their personal history to a broader public discussion of Trump’s comments about women.

2016–2018: O’Donnell’s public opposition

O’Donnell mocked Trump during a 2016 television appearance and spoke at a 2018 protest against his administration, according to the retrospective timeline. These episodes show continued public opposition, but they do not establish that the two were exchanging remarks constantly or reveal private motives.

July 2025: Trump threatens to consider taking away her citizenship

After Trump won the 2024 election, O’Donnell moved to Ireland and said she was seeking Irish citizenship through family lineage. In July 2025, following her criticism of his administration, Trump said he was seriously considering taking away her U.S. citizenship. The statement was a threat to consider action; the cited report does not say her citizenship was revoked.

The Associated Press reported that O’Donnell was born in the United States and quoted University of Virginia School of Law professor Amanda Frost: “The president has no authority to take away the citizenship of a native-born U.S. citizen.” That is Frost’s legal assessment as quoted by AP, not evidence that any citizenship action occurred. Read the AP report on the threat and legal context.

Why has the feud lasted so long?

The public record shows recurring flare-ups rather than one uninterrupted argument: the 2006 Miss USA dispute, subsequent comments and television appearances, Trump’s 2015 debate answer, O’Donnell’s political criticism and the 2025 citizenship threat. Each new episode gave the old conflict fresh relevance, shifting it from celebrity news into presidential politics and, in 2025, a dispute about citizenship. The documented statements establish what each person said in public; they do not establish either person’s private reasons.
