Whoopi Goldberg has said publicly that she had a past addiction to cocaine and that she chose to stop using it. Her account comes mainly from her 2024 memoir, Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me, and from interviews she gave around the book’s May 2024 release. The details below are her own account as reported by Entertainment Tonight, TheGrio, and CBS News in May 2024, not independently verified medical records.
What Goldberg has said about her cocaine use
Goldberg’s memoir places her cocaine use within a longer history of drug use. The reporting on her book lays out the sequence below. Each row is attributed to the outlet that reported it, so you can see where a detail comes from.
| Period | What Goldberg describes | Where it is reported |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier years | Recreational drug use | Memoir coverage, including EL PAÍS English, May 8, 2024 |
| Early 1970s | Says she “cleaned up” from recreational drug use | TheGrio, May 10, 2024, based on the memoir |
| 1980s | Relapse into cocaine use while spending time in New York and Los Angeles. She describes first believing she could handle cocaine, then experiencing hallucinations and serious disruption to her daily life | TheGrio, May 10, 2024, based on the memoir |
| Birthday hotel incident | A housekeeper finds her in a closet after she had taken cocaine. She describes it as a turning point | Memoir; CBS News, May 15, 2024 |
| May 2024 | Says she decided to get sober and that she has stayed sober “all these years” | Entertainment Tonight, May 8, 2024 |
The earliest rows come from a reporter’s summary of the memoir rather than from Goldberg’s direct words, so treat them as the book’s account as relayed by TheGrio.
The hotel incident that she calls a turning point
The episode that Goldberg returns to most often is the one on her birthday. After she had taken cocaine, a housekeeper found her in a closet. Goldberg has described the moment as the one that made her reconsider how she was living. CBS News quotes her reflecting on the scene and the question it forced on her. The fuller passage reads:

The ellipsis marks a section of the CBS passage that is omitted here. Quote the sentence alone only with the surrounding context, since the first line on its own does not convey what she was describing.

The decision to get sober, in her words
Asked by Entertainment Tonight at the May 2024 memoir event about how she got sober, Goldberg framed the choice in simple terms: “Well, it was very simple — do you want to die or do you want to live?”
She followed that with a description of the decision itself: “And I was like, ‘This is way too much to take on, so I decided to get straight. And I did. And we’re good. I like the idea of living.'”

Her account presents getting sober as a choice she made for herself. She does not describe a treatment program, a medical intervention, or a specific recovery method in the reporting available, so the article cannot say what, if anything, supported that choice beyond her own account.
What the available sources can and cannot establish
The clearest evidence of Goldberg’s sobriety is from May 2024. Readers should keep three limits in mind:

- Her sobriety statement is dated. The “all these years” remark was made in 2024. No source reviewed here confirms her status as of October 2026, and this article does not assert it.
- “Thriving” is a headline characterization. It describes how her life looks from the outside. It is not a clinical or recovery assessment.
- Her history is her own account. The timeline, the drug-use details, and the hallucinations are reported from her memoir and interviews. They are not drawn from medical records, and the article does not diagnose her or label the condition beyond what she has described herself.
The phrase “drug addict” in the original headline is also a label she has not used in these sources. Coverage of her memoir describes a past cocaine addiction, and that more specific wording is used here.

Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me is a broader family and life memoir, not a book about addiction alone. Her drug use and recovery appear as part of a larger account that includes her mother and brother. Readers who want Goldberg’s account in her own words, with the context of her life around it, will find the addiction material in the book’s wider narrative rather than in a separate section.
