In the story, Smurf’s house is the Cody family home in Oceanside, California. Smurf is Janine Cody, the family matriarch. The house seen on screen is not always the same physical place: reports identify a Long Beach home used for the pilot-era exterior and a later recreation built as a set in Burbank.
Who lives in Smurf’s house in the story?
Smurf is Janine Cody, and the house is presented as the Cody family home in Oceanside, California. The series’ fictional setting is distinct from the places used to film it. The San Diego Reader’s account of the show’s connection to Oceanside reports that the house representing Smurf’s Oceanside home is actually in Long Beach.
“Smurf’s house” is a useful shorthand for her home and the family’s home base in the story. The location accounts do not establish who legally owns the fictional property or explain how she acquired it, so a more specific ownership claim is not confirmed by these sources.
Where was the house filmed?
| Production detail | What the sources report |
|---|---|
| Fictional setting | Oceanside, California; this is where the series places the Cody home. |
| Pilot-era exterior | A Long Beach house represented Smurf’s “Oceanside” home, according to the San Diego Reader. |
| Later recreation | A filming-location account says the house was rebuilt as a set at Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank in 2017, modeled on the pilot house; see ShotHere’s location account. |
The accounts describe different stages of production, not necessarily a contradiction. The show also filmed some local material in Oceanside, while interiors were filmed at a Los Angeles-area studio, according to the San Diego Reader.

Can you visit Smurf’s house?
The Long Beach location account does not provide a verified public street address, and it does not establish that the house is open to visitors. The Burbank recreation was on Warner Bros. Ranch, which ShotHere describes as a working studio lot not open to the public. These are filming locations, not visitor attractions; do not treat a private residence or studio lot as a place to enter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the house from the Australian film the same one?
No. The 2010 Australian film Animal Kingdom is a separate production from the U.S. television series. Its official Sony Pictures Classics press kit describes a National Trust property used for the film. That production detail should not be confused with the TV series’ fictional Oceanside home or its Long Beach and Burbank filming locations.
