Smith and asked her to rephrase it. Hostin had asked Smith whether he thought he was qualified to run for president and added that “the bar is pretty low.” Goldberg’s request, and Hostin’s explanation of what she meant, became the moment that drew attention to the exchange.
What Hostin asked Smith
The exchange took place near the end of a multi-part interview with Smith on the live daytime talk show. According to the Entertainment Weekly report by Joey Nolfi, Hostin asked:

“Would you do that? You think you’re qualified to run for president? I mean, the bar is pretty low, anyway.”

How the moment unfolded
- Hostin asked Smith whether he would run for president and whether he considered himself qualified, adding that the bar was low.
- Goldberg paused the conversation and asked Hostin to rephrase the question: “That, I would, can you rephrase that?”
- Hostin restated her point and explained that she meant the bar was low because Donald Trump had no political experience before he became president.
- Smith responded to the question about running, as described below.
The report says one co-host gasped before Goldberg intervened. It does not identify who did.
What Smith said about running
Smith said he had repeatedly said “hell no” to the idea of a presidential run. He also said he was interested in debating candidates. His position was conditional: he said he might consider running if he had a legitimate chance to win. He did not announce any plan to run.

Why Hostin’s comparison drew a response
Hostin’s remark tied two things together: Smith’s hypothetical candidacy and her view that the bar for a presidential candidate was low. Her clarification pointed to Trump’s lack of prior political office before 2017 as the reference point. Because Goldberg asked for the point to be restated, the on-air discussion turned on the wording of the question itself rather than on Smith’s answer.

About the show
ABC describes The View as a live weekday talk show. Its Sept. 4, 2026 announcement for the show’s 30th season lists Goldberg and Hostin among the returning co-hosts and says new episodes stream the next day on Disney+ and Hulu. That page is current program information and does not independently confirm the 2024 exchange. See the announcement at ABC’s season 30 premiere listing.
