9-1-1 did not bring Shannon Diaz back to life. Devin Kelley returned in Season 7, Episode 7, as Kim, a new woman whose resemblance to Eddie’s late wife draws him into a story about unresolved grief, idealized memories and choices that violate his usual moral code.
Who does Devin Kelley play in Season 7, Episode 7?
Kelley, who played Shannon, returns as Kim—not as Shannon resurrected or revealed to have survived. Kim is a blonde woman whose likeness to Eddie’s late wife catches him off guard. Eddie’s pursuit of her, including an affair, turns that resemblance into the center of the episode’s conflict. TVLine’s May 9, 2024 interview with Ryan Guzman discusses Kelley’s return and the episode; TheWrap’s May 9, 2024 interview also addresses the story.
Why did the show bring Kelley back?
Showrunner Tim Minear found a way to bring Kelley back in a different role, giving the series a way to make Eddie’s unresolved feelings immediate rather than leaving them in the past. Guzman said Minear had joked about bringing her back: “Tim always joked about finding a way to bring her back.”
For Guzman, the storyline also gives Eddie a chance to act against his own moral code. He described the emotional connection as “this trauma [about losing Shannon] that Eddie has never gotten over.” The return is therefore less a supernatural twist than a dramatic device: Kim’s resemblance unsettles Eddie and exposes how much of his grief he has left unaddressed.

How does Eddie’s memory of Shannon shape the story?
Eddie longs for what he remembers as a second chance with Shannon, but that memory leaves out painful parts of their marriage. Shortly before she died, Shannon had told him she wanted a divorce. The contrast matters: Eddie is drawn toward a version of the relationship shaped by loss and longing, not its full, conflicted reality. Kim’s resemblance gives him a chance to project those hopes onto someone new.
In TVLine’s interview, Guzman said he had asked over several seasons why the writers killed Shannon and whether Kelley could return. He described the new storyline as a way to reveal Eddie’s flaws as he navigates behavior at odds with his values.
