Comedian Atsuko Okatsuka is credited with starting the Drop Challenge. She has said the idea came from the repeated beat drop in Beyoncé’s “Partition,” and she began performing it in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, before posting it. The reporting from early 2022 supports that attribution, but it does not confirm an exact first-post date, total views, or whether the trend is still active today.
What the Drop Challenge is
In the most widely reported version, a person carries on an ordinary activity and then suddenly lowers into a squat while looking at the camera as the beat hits. The contrast between a mundane setting and the abrupt, composed drop is what makes the format recognizable. Coverage describes recreations at workplaces, at home, and in other everyday settings.
The soundtrack is “Partition,” a track from Beyoncé’s self-titled album. Some coverage shortens the excerpt to the label “Yoncé,” but the reporting treats this as the same song. The music is the timing cue, not a piece of equipment: no album, CD, or other purchase is needed to take part.
Who started it
Okatsuka is the creator the reporting points to. In a VoiceTube interview transcript titled “How Beyoncé’s ‘Partition’ Inspired Atsuko Okatsuka’s Viral Drop Challenge,” she describes the origin in her own words:

This is the strongest origin account in the available reporting. The transcript does not give the interview date, so it cannot fix when the first video was posted.

Why Beyoncé is not credited as the creator
Beyoncé performed the song that supplies the beat. The reporting attributes the idea of the challenge to Okatsuka and identifies Beyoncé only as the performer of the soundtrack.

Within months of Okatsuka’s posts, the format was being shared widely on social media. The dated coverage below shows spread and participation. None of these reports says that the participants invented the format.
