His Saturday Night Live-era circle also included Chris Rock and the late Chris Farley. Public accounts show shared history and repeated work, but they do not establish a definitive ranking of who Sandler is closest to privately.
How to read the list
“Close to” can mean a friendship described publicly, years of shared history, or a sustained creative partnership. Sandler’s public interviews and profiles provide evidence for all three, but those kinds of evidence are not interchangeable: appearing in several films can demonstrate a recurring collaboration without proving who is closest in private.
The people below are grouped by the clearest public connection. Some belong in more than one group.
Friends and colleagues from Saturday Night Live
David Spade
Sandler and Spade came up together in the Saturday Night Live world. Sandler recalled Spade as part of that cohort in a 2020 60 Minutes interview, and a 2013 interview traced their connection to their SNL years and noted their later collaborations. Their shared history and work make Spade a longstanding comedy colleague; they do not establish a public ranking of Sandler’s friendships. CBS 60 Minutes; The Independent.

Chris Rock
Rock belongs to the same SNL-era circle described in Sandler’s interview, alongside Spade and Farley. The two also worked together in films, extending the connection beyond their early television years. The evidence supports a longtime comedy and film association, rather than a claim about their private relationship. CBS 60 Minutes; The Independent.
Chris Farley
Sandler spoke warmly about Farley in the 2020 interview and remembered him as exceptionally funny. Farley died in 1997, so he belongs in an account of Sandler’s late friend and colleague, not as a current member of his circle. CBS 60 Minutes.

Recurring screen partners
Drew Barrymore
Barrymore is among the clearest examples of a friendship described directly in public material. The official description of a 2025 Drew Barrymore Show interview calls theirs a “long-term friendship.” Their repeated screen partnership includes The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and Blended. A 2023 program page also presented Barrymore, Sandler and Jennifer Aniston together as friends while they discussed Murder Mystery 2. The Drew Barrymore Show, 2025; The Independent; Fox News.
Rob Schneider
A 2024 feature reports that Schneider and Sandler met while pursuing comedy in the 1980s and later appeared together in numerous films. That long-running comedy and film partnership supports describing Schneider as a longtime collaborator and friend. Fox News.

Kevin James
A 2013 profile counted five Sandler–James film collaborations by that point, and later coverage records further shared screen work. James is therefore a recurring screen collaborator and is commonly described as a friend; the number of roles alone does not measure private closeness. The Independent; Fox News.
Jennifer Aniston
Accounts say Aniston and Sandler met in 1990. They later co-starred in Just Go with It, Murder Mystery and Murder Mystery 2. The Drew Barrymore Show featured Aniston with Sandler and Barrymore and described the group as friends, giving their professional connection a public friendship context as well. The Independent; Fox News; The Drew Barrymore Show.

A creative partner behind the films
Tim Herlihy
Herlihy is a longtime friend and regular collaborator, according to the Associated Press. Their partnership on Happy Gilmore makes him a key creative connection, even though he is less often included in lists focused on Sandler’s actor friends. Associated Press.

Sandler has spoken about making comedy with friends. In a 2013 interview with The Independent, he said, “I got into it to make people laugh and have fun with my friends.” In describing his writing process, he said, “a group of us come up with an idea and work on it . We just riff around, make jokes, try and make each other laugh.” Those remarks help explain why personal and professional circles can overlap in his work, but they do not identify a single closest friend.

For a useful comparison, consider three separate things: whether a source directly calls someone a friend, how far back their shared history goes, and how sustained their creative work together has been. Barrymore has a recent direct public description of a long-term friendship; Spade, Rock and Farley are tied to Sandler’s SNL years; Schneider, James and Aniston have recurring screen connections; and Herlihy is identified as a longtime friend and writing partner. No public evidence here ranks these relationships by private closeness.
