Addam of Hull rides Seasmoke after Laenor Velaryon. In the television series, the dragon chooses him rather than simply being handed over: Seasmoke rejects Ser Steffon Darklyn and then seeks Addam out, and the bond is confirmed in Season 2, Episode 7, “The Red Sowing.” This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 2 and for George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

How the show hands Seasmoke to Addam

Episode 6, “Smallfolk”

The setup begins in Season 2, Episode 6. TIME’s episode coverage describes Seasmoke refusing Ser Steffon Darklyn, the rider the dragon was expected to accept, and then turning toward Addam. The episode establishes the rejection and the pull toward Addam, but the bond itself is not yet confirmed on screen.

Episode 7, “The Red Sowing”

The bond is made official in Episode 7. Sky’s recap of the episode says Rhaenyra tracks down Seasmoke and Addam together, and that Addam explains the dragon found and claimed him. That detail matters for how the scene should be read. The show presents Seasmoke as choosing its rider, not as Addam simply mounting a dragon that happened to be free. Since the dragon’s agency is the point of the storyline, the distinction is worth keeping when you describe the scene to others.

Addam’s place in the Velaryon family on screen

In the television version, Addam is presented as the illegitimate son of Corlys Velaryon. TIME reports that the show makes Addam and his brother Alyn Corlys’s sons, a framing that differs from the novel (covered below). Steve Toussaint, who plays Corlys, described the father’s reaction to his son becoming a dragonrider in an interview quoted by Sky:

“Being initially shocked, Corlys is then very proud. It’s because ‘that’s my son’. Off his own back, he’s made something of himself, and I think that’s very important for Corlys, because that’s how he sees himself.”

The quote is Toussaint’s view of his character, not an official statement on the plot.

Book versus show

The novel account is found in Fire & Blood. A Wiki of Ice and Fire, a fan-run reference, summarizes the book’s rider history: Laenor Velaryon is followed by Addam of Hull, with a riderless period in between before Addam claims Seasmoke. The reference cites Fire & Blood as its source, so the book itself is the authority for these details.

Comparison point Television series (Season 2) Book (Fire & Blood, per the Wiki of Ice and Fire summary)
When the handover happens Set up in Episode 6, confirmed in Episode 7 After a riderless period following Laenor, before Addam claims Seasmoke
Who initiates the encounter Seasmoke rejects Darklyn and seeks out Addam Addam claims Seasmoke
Addam and Alyn’s parentage Corlys Velaryon’s sons, with Addam illegitimate Dragonseeds rumored to be Laenor’s sons
Laenor’s fate Presumed alive, with his staged death part of the storyline Not stated in the cited summary

The parentage row is the clearest adaptation change. The novel’s dragonseeds are rumored children of Laenor, while the show makes them Corlys’s sons. Readers who want to treat the book as the baseline should label it as book history and not use it to fill gaps in the television storyline.

What the show leaves unresolved

The main open question concerns the bond itself. Because Laenor is presumed alive in the show, TIME points out that it is unclear how Seasmoke can accept Addam while Laenor is still living. The series does not settle that question in the episodes covered here, and no single explanation of Laenor’s fate or of dragon-bond rules is established as canon. Treat any theory about the bond as speculation until the series resolves it.
