| Dexter Sol Ansell | The actor who plays him in the television series |
Coverage from TV Guide UK (January 19, 2026) and TV Insider (February 1, 2026) describes Egg as Dunk’s squire and travelling companion for much of the early adventure, which is why viewers first meet him as an unassuming young attendant rather than a prince.
How the reveal happens in episode 3
The identity reveal comes out of a confrontation rather than a formal introduction. Dunk defends Tanselle against Prince Aerion, and the situation escalates. When Dunk is attacked, Egg intervenes, and in the fallout of that fight he identifies Aerion as his brother. That moment tells viewers that the quiet companion has royal blood, and that the Targaryen family is involved in the trouble Dunk has walked into.

TV Insider’s cast interview, published February 1, 2026, pairs this scene with two perspectives: Peter Claffey on how Dunk responds to Aerion’s violence toward Tanselle, and Ansell on why Egg does not reveal who he is straight away. Read together, they explain why the reveal lands as a surprise rather than a plot shortcut.

What Dexter Sol Ansell has said about Egg
In an Entertainment Weekly interview, republished by Yahoo News on February 2, 2026, Ansell discussed what it feels like for Egg to be a Targaryen. He said:
“It feels cool. Feels like I’m a dragon. I just wanna jump out my window and go ‘wee!’ and breathe fire. Yeah, it feels exciting to be a Targaryen. I mean, I don’t know much about Game of Thrones because I’ve never watched it, but I think Targaryen’s the best house, in my opinion.”

He says director Sarah Adina Smith gave him gummy worms while giving notes, and that he kept one in his mouth as the scene began. This is Ansell’s own anecdote from the interview, not a documented production detail, so it is best read as a light behind-the-scenes memory.

Where the character comes from
The series is adapted from George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas. The first adventure follows the events of The Hedge Knight, and the wider collection is the natural next step for viewers who want the original version of Dunk and Egg’s partnership. Source-based comparisons with the novellas are limited here: the available reporting confirms the identity and the episode 3 reveal, but it does not support a detailed scene-by-scene comparison with the books.
