Harper’s Bazaar reports that Pfeiffer and Kelley met on a blind date in January 1993, and that they married later that year. ABC News and Harper’s Bazaar both give the wedding date as November 13, 1993. Neither outlet reports the couple’s private account of the courtship, so the story of how they met is limited to the public accounts Pfeiffer has given.
Pfeiffer’s own description of those early months is the most detailed account on record. In a 2007 interview, quoted by Harper’s Bazaar, she said the adoption of their daughter was already under way when the two met, and that the situation revealed something about him:
“The adoption process was already in motion when he and I met. So we had this child with us right away…But I really got to see him in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men. Obviously, he really rose to the occasion.”

She also described how the arrangement changed the pace of the relationship: “We both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together, and in a strange way, it took the pressure off us, as a couple.” She added that the approach showed that the traditional way of doing things is not always the best.
Their children
The couple has two children, and the two came into the family differently. Their daughter, Claudia Rose, was adopted. Pfeiffer had begun the adoption before she met Kelley and completed it before the wedding, and Kelley later adopted Claudia himself. Reporting does not give the exact date of Kelley’s adoption.
Their son, John Henry, was born in August 1994, nine months after the wedding. He is the couple’s biological child. Reporting from Harper’s Bazaar and ABC News covers the birth; neither gives a more specific date.

From law to television
Kelley’s route into entertainment started with a screenplay. He wrote the script that became the film From the Hip, and Harper’s Bazaar reports that his move into television writing came through L.A. Law. Harper’s Bazaar also describes him as an Emmy-winning writer.

What Pfeiffer has said about the marriage
In a January 2002 interview with ABC News, Pfeiffer described the couple’s shared outlook. She said:
“We just get along. I think we want the same things for our children, want the same things out of our relationship, and we have a similar work ethic, you know, that we both love our work and we love to be challenged.”
She also said: “At the same time, our family is most important and it’s just sort of trying to balance those two things.” The same interview described the couple’s Saturday date-night routine. For most of their marriage, the couple kept their careers apart. El País reported in September 2026 that Pfeiffer had long avoided working with Kelley because she believed it could endanger the relationship. According to that report, she said she had seen couples with strong marriages work together and then divorce the following year.

El País covered her participation in a separate interview piece on September 14, 2026, which also featured Elle Fanning. Harper’s Bazaar’s 2026 profile of Kelley confirms that the couple had been married for more than 30 years at the time.
