Byrne has said they have not yet gone to the courthouse. The accurate description is that Cannavale is her longtime partner, and she uses the word “husband” for him.
Who Bobby Cannavale is
Cannavale is an actor. An AARP interview excerpt, seen only as indexed search text because the full page could not be opened, describes Byrne as his partner and identifies the two as co-stars in the film Ezra. Beyond that excerpt, the public record on his career is best checked against his own credits rather than secondhand summaries.

Are Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale married?
Byrne’s own explanation is the most current word on this. In a 2025 interview with The Washington Post, she said:
“I say ‘married.’ We just haven’t gone to the courthouse yet, but we’re married.”

That sentence separates two things: how she describes the relationship, and whether a legal marriage exists. Her affectionate usage is clear. A legal marriage is a separate question, and the reporting does not establish one. The statements below are dated, so read them in order.
| Date | Source | What was said |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | Vanity Fair | Byrne called Cannavale her “husband”; her representative said they were not legally married “as of yet.” |
| 2025 | The Washington Post interview with Byrne | Byrne said she uses “married” but that they had not yet gone to the courthouse. |
| October 2026 | Current reporting reviewed for this article | No legal marriage is established in the reporting we could find. |
The 2019 statement came from a representative, not from a public record, and it describes the situation at that time. Neither source is an official civil record, so the article does not state a legal status as fact.

How long they have been together
The length of the relationship depends on the source and the year it was reported. In November 2025, Byrne told The Washington Post they had been together for 13 years. The Irish Times reported in 2026 that they had been together since 2012. Because a “years together” figure goes stale every year, the start year is the more durable detail to use.
How they met
According to The Washington Post, the couple met through a mutual friend in 2012. That is the most consistently reported origin detail, and it is the same year the Irish Times gives as the start of the relationship.
Rank #3
Their children
The Washington Post reported in 2025 that the couple has sons born in 2016 and 2017. A 2026 Irish Times profile says Byrne has two children. The two accounts agree on the number of children, so the answer to “do they have children” is yes. Reporting on the children is limited, and it is appropriate to leave identifying details out.
Their work together
The two have appeared together on screen and on stage. Broadway.com reported five collaborations by January 2020 and covered their joint appearance in Medea. That count is a snapshot from that date, not a current total. The AARP excerpt also places the couple together in the film Ezra.

The Golden Globes “husband” moment
At the Golden Globes, Byrne thanked her husband in her acceptance speech. The Irish Times quoted her as saying:
“And I’d like to thank my husband, Bobby Cannavale, who couldn’t be here because we are getting a bearded dragon, and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey.”

Cannavale did not attend the ceremony, which The Irish Times attributed to the family’s plans to get a bearded dragon. The speech is the clearest public example of Byrne using “husband” in front of a large audience, and it shows the affectionate usage described above.
Byrne’s awards context
A PBS NewsHour page dated February 26, 2026 described Byrne as having won a Golden Globe for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and as then being up for her first Oscar. That is awards-season context from a specific date, not a current standing, so check the Academy and Golden Globe records for later results.
