Spoiler note: This article reveals a major character survival and return.
Sabo is not dead. He is Luffy and Ace’s adopted, sworn elder brother and the chief of staff of the Revolutionary Army. The official One Piece character profile describes him in the present tense, and the official anime episode listing includes an episode titled “Sabo’s Return.” Both point to the same answer: he survived the incident that once made readers believe he had died.
Who Sabo is
Sabo is one of the two brothers Luffy and Ace are closest to. The official ONE PIECE.com character profile describes him as Luffy’s elder brother, alongside Ace. As an adult he holds a senior position in the Revolutionary Army, where the same profile lists him as chief of staff.
His Devil Fruit is the Mera Mera no Mi, the same fire-based fruit associated with Ace. That link is why he is so often discussed alongside Ace’s story, and it is the most direct clue to how closely the two characters are tied together in the series.

Is Sabo really dead?
No. Readers who believed he died are reacting to the childhood incident, not to anything in his current status. The official profile says that as a child Sabo was attacked at sea by a Celestial Dragon while setting out. He was then rescued by Dragon. The attack made it look as though he had been lost, but the rescue is what the series confirms.
The episode title is the clearest official signal. ONE PIECE.com’s anime episode listing includes episode 1117, titled “Sabo’s Return.” That title confirms he came back to the story. The episode page itself could not be opened for further detail during this check, so the title is the only specific we can state with confidence about that episode.

Some readers point to the chaos around the Reverie arc as evidence that Sabo was killed. None of the official material reviewed as of October 2026 supports a death. The profile’s present-tense role and the “Sabo’s Return” title both contradict it.
How he survived
The survival story has two parts, and they are easy to blur together:
