Patricia Lofton is commonly identified as Oprah Winfrey’s maternal half-sister. Vernita Lee is the mother they share, and Lee placed Patricia for adoption after giving birth to her in Milwaukee in 1963. Patricia and Oprah met in 2010, and Oprah introduced her on air in January 2011. The family connection is well documented in reporting from 2011 and a 2013 update, but those reports say little about Patricia’s life since.

What the relationship means

A maternal half-sister shares a mother but not both parents. In this case, the shared parent is Vernita Lee. Oprah has said she did not know her mother was pregnant in 1963, when she was living with her father. That detail explains why the discovery was a surprise to Oprah rather than a family matter that had been discussed openly.

How the connection came to light

Patricia searched for her birth family for years before she learned of the link to Oprah’s family. The 2011 reporting describes two separate threads: a documentary search and a later genetic check.

The documentary search

Patricia’s search drew on adoption records. According to ABC News’s 2011 account, she also recognized matching family details in a television report about Vernita Lee. Her identification therefore rested on records and a news story, not on a single lucky break.

DNA as confirmation

ABC News reported that DNA tests showed an 85 percent match between Patricia and Oprah’s niece. That is a 2011 figure from ABC’s reporting, and it serves as corroboration of a connection the other evidence had already pointed toward. The same account does not show that a consumer DNA kit started the search, so the test should not be read as the discovery method.

Why the name causes confusion

Early 2011 coverage called her Patricia and did not publish a surname. Lofton is the name readers search for today and the name used in this article’s title. Because the early reports withheld a surname, this article does not treat Lofton as confirmed from those reports alone. Two separate names are easy to mix up:

Rank #2
  • Patricia Lofton: Oprah’s maternal half-sister, born in 1963 and placed for adoption.
  • Patricia Lee Lloyd: an earlier half-sister of Oprah’s, also named Patricia, who died in 2003. She is a different person and should not be merged with the sister discussed here.

What Patricia said in 2011

CBS Chicago’s January 24, 2011 report quoted Patricia as saying: “I always had a feeling that she didn’t mean to give me up.” That sentence is attributed to Patricia as quoted in the report. It is not a transcript of a full interview.

What the public record does not establish

The reporting cited here is from 2011 and 2013. It does not establish the following, and this article does not speculate about them:
