No official announcement names a retirement opponent for him, and no wrestler has been publicly tied to a Gunther match in which that wrestler’s career is on the line. Any name offered as the answer is a prediction, not a booking.
What WWE has actually established
Gunther’s recent run has produced three retirement storylines, and WWE’s own materials frame each one differently. The table below separates what WWE has stated from what remains open.
| Wrestler | Gunther match or event | How WWE frames it | Career explicitly on the line? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goldberg | Retirement match announced for 2025, set up by a Gunther confrontation | WWE’s Gunther Superstar profile lists retiring Goldberg as part of his 2025 run | Not stated as a stipulation in the sources reviewed; the match is presented as Goldberg’s retirement match |
| John Cena | Saturday Night’s Main Event match against Gunther, December 2025 | WWE billed the match as Cena’s final match | Presented as Cena’s pre-announced final match rather than a stipulation tied to Gunther’s career |
| AJ Styles | Royal Rumble 2026, won by Gunther | WWE’s official results state that Gunther retired Styles | Yes. WWE’s storyline placed Styles’ career at stake |
The distinction matters. A wrestler announcing a final match is different from a storyline in which an opponent’s career is explicitly on the line. Only the Styles outcome fits the second category in the official material, so it is the one most often cited as the model for a Gunther “retirement” angle.
Why Brock Lesnar is not the answer
Brock Lesnar was the most frequently suggested next name in fan and wrestling-media discussion. That speculation has been overtaken by WWE’s own announcements. WWE announced that Lesnar had retired from professional wrestling, then documented his return and his matches with Oba Femi. WWE’s SummerSlam 2026 results state that Oba Femi defeated Lesnar in Hell in a Cell.

Those official sources do not establish any Gunther-Lesnar retirement program. If you cover the theory, present it as an example of speculation that has since been overtaken, not as a likely outcome.
Other names
The official material reviewed does not name another wrestler as WWE’s choice for Gunther’s next retirement match. Age, past rivalries and fan popularity do not establish creative plans, so they are not a reliable basis for picking a name.

How to judge a next-name claim
- Has WWE announced the wrestler’s retirement or final match? If not, the claim is speculation.
- Has WWE put the wrestler’s career on the line in a Gunther match? Check the event results for the stipulation, not just the promotional talk.
- Has a Gunther match been announced at all? A rumored opponent without a listed match is not a booking.
- Has a later development made the claim stale? As the Lesnar case shows, a theory can be overtaken within months.
Where to check for updates
Use WWE’s official Gunther Superstar profile, the event results pages for each show, and WWE’s own retirement announcements. Event pages also list the platforms that carry a given show; availability depends on the event and on your country, so confirm there before planning to watch.
Based on the official record checked on October 8, 2026, no next opponent for Gunther’s retirement storylines has been confirmed.
