Season 2 of The Rings of Power does not name the Dark Wizard. The finale reveals that the Stranger is Gandalf, but Ciarán Hinds’s Dark Wizard remains unnamed, and as of 8 October 2026 the showrunners have not identified him. What is settled is who he is not: co-showrunner Patrick McKay has said definitively that he is not Saruman. A Blue Wizard identity is a fan theory with lore support, not a confirmed answer.
What the Season 2 finale settled
The finale answers a different mystery. It confirms that the Stranger is Gandalf. That reveal does not extend to the Dark Wizard, who is a separate character with a separate identity.
The showrunners have said the Dark Wizard remains unnamed at the end of Season 2. They have described him as an important figure for Middle-earth and for Gandalf’s development, and they left his fate unresolved. In an October 2024 Vanity Fair interview following the finale, McKay said the name was not yet public and that the character matters to Gandalf’s arc.
What the Dark Wizard reveals about himself
The character is presented as a wizard operating in Rhûn. In his own statement to Gandalf, he says he is one of five wizards. That is the most concrete self-description the show has given, and it narrows the field without naming him.

This is the one identity point the creators have explicitly closed. Any theory that depends on the Dark Wizard being Saruman contradicts that statement.
The Blue Wizard theory
The Blue Wizards are the most common explanation fans offer, because Tolkien’s writing places a group of wizards in the East and the Dark Wizard operates there. The showrunners have not confirmed that link. The complication is that Tolkien’s own accounts of the Blue Wizards do not agree with one another.

| Tolkien source | Names given | Arrival and timing | Activity in the East |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1954 essay on the Istari, published in Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth | Alatar and Pallando | Journey with Saruman into the East in the Third Age | not stated |
| Later material | Morinehtar and Rómestámo | Arrival in the Second Age | Opposition to Melkor-worship in the East and South |
| Another account | not stated | not stated | Abandoned their mission and founded dark cults |
These are competing strands in Tolkien’s writings. They show why the Blue Wizard idea is plausible but unresolved: the same name set can be read as heroic opponents of Melkor-worship or as wizards who turned to darkness. Nothing in the Season 2 reporting shows the television character to be any one of them.
Radagast and other names
Radagast is the other name readers often raise. The reporting reviewed here does not establish that the Dark Wizard is Radagast, and it should not be treated as an identification. Readers weighing any candidate can use three tests:

- Does it fit the eastern, Rhûn setting?
- Does it match a specific version of Tolkien’s Blue Wizard material, rather than a blend of them?
- Is it consistent with what the showrunners have explicitly confirmed? Saruman fails this test.
What to expect next
The showrunners told GamesRadar+ at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that the identity reveal will come early in Season 3. When asked whether Season 3 would reveal it, co-showrunner J.D. Payne replied: “We are! That’s all we can say.”
The same report gave November 11 as the scheduled premiere date for the first four episodes. That date comes from a 2026 report and may change, so check the broadcaster’s current listing before relying on it.
