Zazie Beetz is a German-American actor best known for playing Vanessa “Van” Keifer on FX’s Atlanta. On film she has played Domino in Deadpool 2, Sophie in Joker, and Stagecoach Mary Fields in the 2021 Western The Harder They Fall. The biographical details below come from profiles published by ELLE (April 27, 2021), W Magazine (January 14, 2022), and Vanity Fair (October 7, 2022), so they reflect what those interviews reported at the time.
Early life, family and training
- She was born in Berlin and has roots in both Germany and the United States. Beetz has described her mother as Black American and her father as German. The family later moved to New York, and she has spoken about identifying strongly with both her Black and German backgrounds. The biographical details come from ELLE and Vanity Fair.
- She started acting as a child. Her early experience included school and after-school theater. In an interview with W Magazine, she recalled that her first play was a standard school production when she was about seven.
- She has pursued several creative interests. Beetz has described interests in languages, singing, drawing, painting, clothing and theater. She trained in theater at LaGuardia High School in New York. At Skidmore College she majored in French and spent a year studying abroad, according to Vanity Fair.
The breakthrough: Atlanta
- Atlanta was her breakthrough role. ELLE reports that Beetz was cast as Vanessa “Van” Keifer in 2015. The performance earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, as reported by ELLE in 2021. The nomination is the most concrete award recognition in the sources reviewed for this profile.
Film roles across genres
Beetz’s film work has moved between a superhero comedy, a crime drama, a dramatic comedy and a Western. ELLE identifies her as Domino in Deadpool 2 and Sophie in Joker. Vanity Fair also discusses her roles in The Harder They Fall and Bullet Train.
Asked about this range, she told Vanity Fair: “I really don’t want to just be seen as one thing.” The remark came in a discussion of moving among genres and identities rather than staying within a single career type.
The Harder They Fall and Stagecoach Mary Fields
In The Harder They Fall, released in 2021, Beetz plays Stagecoach Mary Fields. W Magazine describes her character as a tough saloon owner in the film. The character is based on the historical Mary Fields, whom ELLE describes as the first Black woman mail carrier in the United States. The film’s character is a dramatized version of that history, so it is worth keeping the two separate when discussing what the film shows.

Why she was drawn to the Western
In her W Magazine interview, Beetz said she saw the project as a chance to refresh a familiar genre. She said: “I just thought it was a really great opportunity to give this older thing that so many people love a new edge.” She also linked that approach to changing representation in Westerns.
Her riding experience
The role required horseback riding, and W Magazine’s Lynn Hirschberg asked whether Beetz could ride before the film. Beetz answered: “I actually could, not in a super-trained way.” She explained that she had ridden informally as a child but had no formal training. She called riding one of her favorite parts of shooting the Western, but she did not present herself as an experienced rider.
