Oona Chaplin plays her. The film’s official pages list its theatrical release as December 19, 2025. Varang is the film’s main antagonist to the Sully family, but the official material and Chaplin’s own account present her as something more complicated: a figure her own people regard as a protector who pulled them out of misery.
Who the Mangkwan are
The Mangkwan are the clan known as the Ash People. Official production notes say a volcano devastated their home and dramatically changed their culture and way of life. The clan blames Eywa, the All-Mother of Pandora, for the disaster. The official trailer feature describes their home, Ash Village, as a barren landscape shaped by volcanic eruption.
That backstory matters for Varang because her authority rests on the clan’s experience of that catastrophe, not on a role inherited from an earlier conflict. Varang is the clan’s leader, and her decisions are made within a community that has already lost its home once.
Varang as an antagonist to the Sullys
Within the story’s main conflict, Varang is the antagonist. The official trailer feature introduces her as a threat to Kiri, and her line to Kiri, “Your goddess has no dominion here,” is the clearest statement of that opposition in the material released so far. The line is taken from the trailer feature, so it reflects how the film presents her at that point rather than a full account of her motives.

The antagonist label is accurate to her conflict with the Sully family. It describes her role in their story, not her standing with the Mangkwan. The two framings need to be kept apart, which is the core of understanding her.
Why her own people see her differently
Chaplin frames Varang as a hero to her people. The official Avatar feature reports her statement: “It’s easy to fall into the villain mentality, but actually she’s the hero of her people. Because she’s saved them out of misery and starvation and begging.”

This is Chaplin’s character perspective. It explains how Varang understands her role and why the Mangkwan follow her. It is not an objective claim that her actions are justified, and the film does not ask viewers to accept it as one.

“Varang is going down the dark path of being a shaman, being a Tsahik. She sought out the dark version of those arts and trained herself. She actually has this kind of mind domination capability and pain infliction capability. It allows her to harness the truth from anyone.”
In the film’s world, these are shamanic abilities tied to the Tsahik tradition. The abilities are supernatural within Pandora’s setting. Cameron’s description should be read as the film’s own framework, not as a real-world concept.

Chaplin on complexity and compassion
In a later official Avatar interview, Chaplin explains her approach to the role: “Jim did such a good job at making her a complex character, so I wanted to have her pain and her hurt and her broken heart very present.” She says the aim was to give viewers a chance to feel compassion for Varang even when she does “abominable things.”
This gives the audience a way to hold two positions at once. Varang can be the film’s antagonist and still be understood through the wounds that shaped her.
