Chu has not confirmed a third movie. He said that ideas were circulating and left the possibility open; Universal has also reportedly explored ways to continue the franchise without settling on a project or format. Gregory Maguire’s Oz novels offer further reading, not a confirmed blueprint for a sequel.
Has a third Wicked film been confirmed?
No. At the November 2025 New York premiere of Wicked: For Good, Chu responded to questions about a possible third film by saying, “there’s a lot of ideas flying around right now,” then added, “We’ll see. Let’s enjoy this ride first.” Variety reported the exchange as a tentative comment, not an announcement of an approved or in-production movie.
Universal Pictures chief marketing officer Michael Moses likewise described the franchise’s future as unsettled. Variety quoted him saying, “Have we figured it out yet? No. But there are things underway.” That indicates exploration, but does not establish a title, story, medium, cast, or schedule.
Is Wicked: For Good the last Wicked movie?
It completes the two-film adaptation of the stage musical’s story. Before the sequel’s release, Chu described the adaptation as intended to be a “two-movie experience,” while leaving room for future work with “You never know.” ComingSoon reported his comments from an Access Hollywood interview at the film’s São Paulo premiere.

That distinction matters: the two-part adaptation has a planned endpoint, but the director’s remarks do not rule out another Oz story. They also do not say that any continuation would be a direct sequel to the films or use the same characters.

The source novel behind the musical
Gregory Maguire’s Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West is the novel that inspired the stage musical. Universal’s official film page describes Wicked: For Good as based on the musical, tracing the adaptation lineage from Maguire’s novel to the screen. The novel is relevant further reading, but no cited announcement says a third movie will adapt it again or draw a new story from it.

Maguire’s other Oz novels
Maguire continued his Oz sequence with books including Son of a Witch, which follows Liir, and Out of Oz, which follows Rain. Vanity Fair’s overview of the Oz books discusses these later novels as possible material for readers curious about the wider fictional world. Their existence does not mean either book has been selected for a film.
