Yuji Itadori is a first-year student at Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College who can withstand the poison of Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses. After acting to save his friends, Yuji accepts a mission to prevent wrongful deaths and is drawn into the sorcerers’ fight against curses.
Who is Yuji Itadori?
Yuji is the central character of Jujutsu Kaisen, a story about people caught up in a supernatural conflict. The anime’s official profile describes him as a rare individual who can withstand Sukuna’s poison. That ability makes Yuji important to the sorcerers, but his choice to protect others is what brings him into their work.
VIZ’s series synopsis says Yuji acts to save his friends before being thrust into a world where cursed spirits threaten people and sorcerers defend the living. Sukuna’s scattered body parts can grant destructive power, adding urgency to the struggle.
Why does Yuji fight curses?
Yuji accepts the mission of preventing wrongful deaths. He is not introduced as someone seeking power or status: the publisher’s synopsis frames his entry into the conflict as an attempt to save his friends. His protective instinct becomes the foundation for his role among the sorcerers.
#1 Best Overall
- From the S.H.Figuarts Jujutsu Kaisen series, 'Yuji Itadori' from the "Shibuya Incident"—who unleashed 120% of his potential—joins the lineup!
- A newly sculpted head and interchangeable hair parts let you create a variety of scenes and poses
- Effect parts to reproduce "Black Flash" are also included
- Stands approximately 5.9" tall. [Set Contents] Main figure, interchangeable wrist parts: 4 types for the left hand, 3 types for the right hand, interchangeable facial expression parts: 3 types, interchangeable bangs part, set of effect parts.

The story uses “curses” and “cursed spirits” for its supernatural threats. VIZ separately describes Sukuna as a legendary, feared demon, so treating every supernatural being in the series as a demon blurs a distinction in the premise.
What makes Yuji unusual?
Yuji can withstand Sukuna’s poison, a rare ability singled out in the official anime character profile. The profile calls him an individual not seen for a thousand years. That description is a character-profile claim, not a measured statistic; it establishes how exceptional the story considers him, rather than giving a numerical ranking or test result.

What is Yuji like as a character?
Yuji’s voice actor, Junya Enoki, has spoken about the difficulty of understanding him. In an official interview about the Shibuya Incident, Enoki said: 「虎杖を演じる時にいつも思うのが、彼を理解することは難しいということ。」 This can be translated as, “What I always think when playing Itadori is that understanding him is difficult.” The translation is provided here as a translation of Enoki’s Japanese statement, not as official English wording.
Enoki discusses the challenge of portraying Yuji’s reactions to the events around episodes 44 and 45, including a scene with Aoi Todo after Yuji has witnessed losses. That performance context points to a character shaped not just by his unusual ability, but by the emotional weight of what happens around him.

Where can you read or watch Jujutsu Kaisen?
The series began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2018. VIZ lists the manga, anime releases, and official guidebooks. For the original manga, Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 1 is a starting point; the Jujutsu Kaisen: The Official Character Guide offers additional background on characters and curses. Neither is necessary to understand Yuji’s basic role.
Later-story spoiler: Yuji and Choso
Spoiler: A later official character entry says Choso recognizes Yuji as a brother and acts alongside him after the Shibuya Incident. This connection develops later in the story, so it is separate from Yuji’s initial introduction as a student drawn into the fight after saving his friends.
