Anthony Perkins (April 4, 1932–September 12, 1992) was an American actor whose career encompassed stage and screen work, European films, songwriting, and directing. He is best known for playing Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960), but he had earned an Academy Award nomination years before that role. Perkins said the film gave him career longevity while also limiting the parts he was offered.

Anthony Perkins before Psycho

Born in New York City to actor Osgood Perkins and Janet Rane, Anthony was five when his father died. Perkins later spoke about the distress and guilt he associated with that childhood loss; those recollections are his account, not a clinical explanation of his later roles.

Perkins made his feature-film debut in The Actress (1953) and appeared on Broadway in Tea and Sympathy (1954). His performance in Friendly Persuasion (1956) brought an Academy Award nomination for supporting actor. In Fear Strikes Out (1957), he played baseball player Jimmy Piersall. According to Perkins, that film helped attract Hitchcock’s attention.

How Norman Bates made him famous—and shaped his career

In Psycho (1960), Perkins played Norman Bates, the unsettling owner of the Bates Motel. In a 1983 oral-history excerpt published by the Golden Globes, Perkins recalled that Hitchcock had selected him before they met, after seeing his work in Fear Strikes Out. Perkins’s account of Hitchcock’s casting preserves his description of how the director chose him.

The role became the defining public association of Perkins’s career, but he described its effect as mixed. “I think ‘Psycho’ is one of the things that’s given me longevity in this business. But of course it’s also kept me from roles,” he said in a 1990 Los Angeles Times interview. The film kept him visible while encouraging the industry and audience to see him through Bates.

That association should not be confused with Perkins’s own personality or private life. In the same 1990 interview, he reflected on how people connected him to Norman and said that marriage and having children had likely changed the similarities they perceived. Bates is a fictional character, not a guide to understanding Perkins.

His work beyond Norman Bates

Stage, screen, and European films

Perkins continued acting in a range of projects. He appeared in Orson Welles’s The Trial (1963), worked in European films during the 1960s and 1970s, and later appeared in American releases including Murder on the Orient Express (1974) and The Black Hole (1979). This work makes his career broader than the single role for which he is most remembered.

Writing, directing, and music

Perkins co-wrote the mystery film The Last of Sheila (1973) with Stephen Sondheim. He also sang and recorded music: the Hollywood Walk of Fame’s profile reports that his recording “Moon-Light Swim” reached No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1957. The profile also lists a Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actor, without specifying an award year.

Family life and the Psycho sequels

Perkins married photographer Berry Berenson in 1973, and they had two sons. In his 1990 interview, he described family life as more structured and calm than the public image attached to him.

He returned as Norman Bates in three follow-ups: Psycho II (1983), Psycho III (1986), and Psychо IV: The Beginning (1990). Perkins also directed Psycho III. The sequels extended his association with Bates while adding directing to his work behind the camera.

How Anthony Perkins died

Perkins died at home in Hollywood on September 12, 1992, aged 60, from complications of AIDS. A family spokeswoman said at the time that she did not know how long he had been ill or how he had contracted AIDS; the available contemporary reporting does not establish either a precise diagnosis date or a transmission route.

In a statement prepared shortly before his death and read by family spokeswoman Leslee Dart, Perkins explained why he had not made his illness public: “I chose not to go public about (having AIDS) because, to misquote ‘Casablanca,’ ‘I’m not much at being noble,’ but it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of one old actor don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.” He also wrote that he had learned about love and understanding from people he met through the AIDS crisis. The Los Angeles Times obituary reported his death and the prepared remarks.

Why Anthony Perkins is remembered

Perkins remains inseparable from Norman Bates in popular memory, yet his career began before Psycho and continued across acting, music, writing, and directing. His story is also a reminder that a performer’s most famous character—and the assumptions audiences attach to it—do not define the person who played it.
