The Who’s drummer depends on the period: Keith Moon played with the band from 1964 until his death in 1978; Kenney Jones was his immediate successor; and Zak Starkey later became the group’s long-time drummer. In 2025, Pete Townshend said Starkey had agreed to return, while the band separately named Scott Devours as drummer for its 2025 North American Farewell Tour. Those are distinct roles, not proof of a single permanent lineup beyond that tour.
Who played drums in The Who?
The band’s history is not a direct jump from Keith Moon to Zak Starkey. Kenney Jones replaced Moon after his death, and Starkey joined the story later as a long-time drummer. Scott Devours has also filled in and received a specific tour appointment.
| Drummer | Period or role | What the band’s sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Keith Moon | Joined in spring 1964; played with the group until his death in 1978 | The Who’s official biography says he joined after an impromptu audition and identifies Who Are You as his last recorded work with the group. |
| Kenney Jones | Chosen after Moon’s death in 1978 | His official biography names Face Dances and It’s Hard as albums he recorded with The Who. |
| Zak Starkey | Later long-time drummer; credited on the 2019 album WHO | The band’s album page describes him as its long-time drummer. Pete Townshend said in April 2025 that Starkey had agreed to return and adjust his playing for the band’s non-orchestral lineup. |
| Scott Devours | 2013 fill-in and drummer announced for the 2025 North American Farewell Tour | The Who’s touring-band page records both roles; it does not describe Devours as the band’s permanent drummer. |
Why Keith Moon is the drummer many people associate with The Who
Moon joined in spring 1964, following an impromptu audition at the Oldfield pub in Greenford. The band’s biography describes his approach as using the drums as a lead instrument. His tenure ended with his death on 7 September 1978.
John Entwistle, The Who’s bassist, captured Moon’s unusual style this way in the band’s biography: “He didn’t play from left to right or right to left, he’d play forwards. I’ve never seen anyone play like that before or since.”

Who replaced Keith Moon?
Kenney Jones was The Who’s immediate successor to Moon. The band chose him after Moon died in 1978. Jones recorded Face Dances and It’s Hard with the group, making his place in the lineup a separate chapter between Moon and Starkey.
When did Zak Starkey become The Who’s drummer?
Starkey became associated with The Who after Jones’s period. The band’s official page for WHO, released on 6 December 2019, calls Starkey its long-time drummer and documents his work on that recording.

On 19 April 2025, Pete Townshend said Starkey had agreed to return and adapt his playing for the band’s non-orchestral lineup. Townshend also took responsibility for the confusion around the preceding situation, writing: “We are a family, this blew up very quickly and got too much oxygen. It’s over. We move forward now with optimism and fire in our bellies.” The statement documents that moment; it should not be read as settling every later lineup change.
What was Scott Devours’s role?
Scott Devours substituted for Starkey on The Who’s 2013 Quadrophenia & More tour. The band’s touring page also names Devours as drummer for its 2025 North American Farewell Tour. That is a tour-specific assignment, distinct from Townshend’s April 2025 statement about Starkey, and does not by itself establish a permanent appointment.

Who plays drums in The Who now?
The most precise answer is date- and role-specific. The official sources establish Starkey’s long-term association and Townshend’s April 2025 statement that he had agreed to return; the touring-band page names Devours for the 2025 North American Farewell Tour. Those sources do not establish a permanent drummer appointment after that tour, so a broader claim about the current permanent lineup is not supported here.
