Sean Connery played Bond in six EON films, and if you also count his separate 1983 film Never Say Never Again, the two actors tie at seven theatrical Bond films. The answer depends on which films you count, so the sections below separate the official series from the wider set of Bond films.
The count for the official EON series
The EON series runs from Dr. No (1962) through No Time to Die (2021), the most recent entry in the list used here. Counting the films each actor headlined as Bond gives the following totals:
| Actor | EON-series films | Films outside the EON series | Total theatrical Bond films |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roger Moore | 7 | None | 7 |
| Sean Connery | 6 | Never Say Never Again (1983) | 7 |
| Daniel Craig | 5 | None | 5 |
| Pierce Brosnan | 4 | None | 4 |
| Timothy Dalton | 2 | None | 2 |
| George Lazenby | 1 | None | 1 |
Moore’s seven films are Live and Let Die (1973), The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Moonraker (1979), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Octopussy (1983) and A View to a Kill (1985). Connery’s six EON films are Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever (1971).
These totals count released films in which the actor played Bond. They are not measures of how long each actor held the role, and they say nothing about public appearances outside the films.

Why Never Say Never Again changes the answer
Never Say Never Again (1983) was a Bond film made outside the EON series, and it starred Connery. Whether it counts is the single decision that moves the answer. Under an EON-only rule, Moore leads outright. Under a rule that counts every theatrical Bond film, Connery’s seventh film produces a tie.
The International Standard Audiovisual Number (ISAN) registry lists both Moore’s EON films and Connery’s Never Say Never Again, so the film-and-actor pairings are not limited to a single source.

Television and older screen versions
If the question is broadened to anyone who has played Bond on screen, two earlier productions come into play. Barry Nelson played Bond in the 1954 television adaptation of Casino Royale, and David Niven played Bond in the 1967 film Casino Royale. Neither appearance affects the film totals above. Both belong to the wider history of Bond on screen rather than to the count of Bond films.
How to choose the right count
- Official EON series only: Roger Moore, seven films.
- All theatrical Bond films: Roger Moore and Sean Connery tied at seven.
- Any screen appearance, including television: the count widens to include Barry Nelson’s 1954 television role and David Niven’s 1967 film, and the EON and theatrical totals no longer settle the question.
A note on sources
The film list used here is maintained by JamesBond.de, a privately run reference site that describes itself as unofficial. The ISAN registry independently corroborates the film-and-actor entries, including Connery’s Never Say Never Again. No current official 007 page explicitly stating the record was located, so the answer rests on the counts of released films rather than on an official announcement.

Context on Moore’s casting
TIME’s Lily Rothman quotes producer Harry Saltzman, speaking in a 1973 interview, on Moore’s casting: “Fleming would have been delighted with Roger, however. He is the classic Englishman. He looks good and he moves good.” The remark speaks to Moore’s image and suitability for the part, not to how many films he made.
For readers who want to compare the performances, the films are easiest to follow in release order, which runs from Connery’s first entry to Craig’s No Time to Die.
