Tom Bombadil is a figure from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth writings who is hard to pin down, and Season 2 of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power gives him a live-action body for the first time. Rory Kinnear plays him. The show moves him out of his traditional home and into the land of Rhûn, a change the showrunners explain in terms of the story they are telling. Tolkien’s own account of what Bombadil is remains unsettled, and the official coverage does not resolve it.
Who Tom Bombadil is in Tolkien’s books
In Tolkien’s writing, Bombadil is a jovial, singing presence who lives in the Withywindle, a forest that showrunner J.D. Payne describes as “this sort of almost enchanted forest.” He is not a conventional hero. He does not chase the Ring or lead an army, and the hobbits who meet him gain knowledge from him without being pulled into the larger conflict.
The official coverage does not establish a definitive origin for him. Readers who expect a settled answer about his nature, including whether he belongs to any particular category of being, will not find one in the About Amazon articles that describe the series. Treat his identity as an open question in the source material rather than a fact the show has confirmed.
Who plays him in Season 2
Rory Kinnear plays Tom Bombadil in Season 2. Amazon describes this as the character’s live-action debut. The season premiered on Prime Video on August 29, 2024, and runs eight episodes. The premiere date is a historical release fact. Streaming territories and platform arrangements change over time, so check your local Prime Video catalogue before watching.

Amazon also places the season thousands of years before The Hobbit and the The Lord of the Rings trilogy, in the Second Age of Middle-earth.
Why the show moves him to Rhûn
The most noticeable change is geographic. In Tolkien’s books Bombadil stays in the Withywindle. In the series, he has traveled east. Payne explained the choice in an About Amazon article, which is the main primary account of the reasoning:

“In our story, he has gone out to the lands of Rhûn, which we learn used to be sort of Edenic and green and beautiful, but now is sort of a dead wasteland. Tom has gone out there to see what’s happened as he goes on his various wanderings.”
The show’s version therefore uses Bombadil’s wandering nature as a reason for him to appear in a damaged landscape, where the audience sees the consequences of earlier events. Amazon reports that the storyline places him alongside the Stranger, which gives the character a narrative role he does not have in the books.

What the showrunners say about his function
Payne and co-showrunner Patrick McKay describe Bombadil as a character without a strong agenda. Payne says: “He’s not a character who has a particularly strong agenda. He observes drama, but largely doesn’t participate in it.” McKay adds a point about the hobbits: “Knowledge that’s not particularly relevant to anything that they’re doing or about to do.”

These are the showrunners’ readings of Tolkien’s role for the character. They are not canonical rules about Bombadil, and they should be read as interpretation rather than Tolkien’s final word. About Amazon reports that the comments were originally made to Vanity Fair.

If the series makes you curious about the original character, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil by J.R.R. Tolkien is the book that collects his poems and songs. Amazon reported that HarperCollins planned a paperback re-release on August 20, ahead of the Season 2 premiere. The article does not state the year in the text reviewed, so confirm the current edition and listing with the publisher before buying.

Chris Smith, Tolkien publishing director at HarperCollins, framed the reissue this way: “It’s my hope that with the introduction of Rory Kinnear’s portrayal of Tom Bombadil in The Rings of Power, that audiences strive to learn more about this character and his many adventures in Tolkien’s Middle-earth and the wisdom he imparts to all readers.”
What remains open
Three questions are not settled by the official coverage: what Tolkien ultimately meant Bombadil to be, whether the Rhûn storyline will be expanded in later material, and how the show’s choices will be read by viewers who know the books well. The Season 2 coverage reviewed here establishes the casting, release facts, and the showrunners’ stated reasoning, and nothing beyond that.
