Together with Mars and Ari Levine, he forms The Smeezingtons, the writing and production team behind much of Mars’s recorded work. Lawrence’s credits also reach into film, with songwriting and music production on the 2020 Netflix musical Jingle Jangle and a voice role in Rio 2.
Who Philip Lawrence is
Lawrence works across four disciplines: writing songs, producing recordings, performing, and comedy. The descriptor comes from his professional roster biography at Stellar Songs. Most of his public recognition, however, comes from songwriting and production on Bruno Mars’s records, and that is where most of the verifiable detail sits.
What “right-hand man” means in this context
“Right-hand man” is headline framing, not a formal job title. Lawrence has no documented role as Mars’s manager, assistant or employee. The better description is a close creative collaborator. Stellar Songs describes him as known for more than a decade of working with Mars, and Music Business Worldwide, in an interview profile, describes him as a key creative partner for more than 15 years. The two figures differ because they measure different things: the roster counts “more than a decade” and the trade publication counts “more than 15 years.” Neither source gives a start date, so the exact length of the partnership is best stated as “more than a decade.”
The Smeezingtons
The Smeezingtons is the name Lawrence, Mars and Ari Levine use as a songwriting and production team. The Recording Academy’s official profile for the group records its nominations and award history, which is the most reliable place to check specific credits. Lawrence’s role is shared with his partners: the Smeezingtons name describes a joint unit, so credits on any given song should be read against the individual song listing rather than assumed from the group name.
