Machine Gun Kelly’s drummer is known as Rook, the performing name of JP (John) Cappelletty. Public reporting from 2017, 2021 and 2022 identifies him as MGK’s drummer or as part of the band’s touring lineup. The most recent dated coverage I could confirm runs through 2022, so his place in MGK’s lineup as of 2026 is not established by that record.
Who Rook is
Rook is the stage name of drummer JP Cappelletty. One artist profile gives his full name as John Cappelletty, and local reporting uses both names in the same piece. Friends and band members call him Rook, which is why the nickname appears in the press rather than the birth name.
WTVG 13ABC, the Toledo, Ohio television station, ran a local feature on November 30, 2017 titled “Local drummer making a name for himself around the world.” It introduces “JP Cappelletty, or Rook as his band mates call him,” as Machine Gun Kelly’s drummer and traces his Toledo beginnings. In the piece he recalls going to concerts with his father and deciding he wanted to be a drummer after watching the players on stage:
“I was always going to concerts with my dad. Every time I would see the drummers on stage, I would say to my dad that’s what I want to do, I want to be that guy. That’s what I always wanted to do with my life.”

How he joined MGK
The most detailed account of how the connection began comes from Inked, in a profile published March 24, 2021, titled “Rook’s Gambit.” In it, Rook says MGK called him while he was in his last class of the day during his final high-school semester, and the band asked whether he could come to Cleveland that same day. He describes the call as his entry into MGK’s traveling band.
That account is a personal recollection published in a feature interview. It explains how the relationship started, but it is not a roster announcement, and it does not give a date for his first show with the band.

Live role versus recorded drums
The sources support describing Rook as MGK’s drummer or touring-band drummer during the periods they cover. They do not establish that he played drums on most of MGK’s studio recordings. Readers often assume that a touring drummer also drums on the albums, but those are separate roles and can involve different players.
Fans ask this question directly. A September 13, 2024 Reddit thread in r/MachineGunKelly asks, “Who does the drumming in most of mgks songs?” The replies in that thread are fan opinions and should not be treated as credit information.

To answer a question about a specific song or album, use these checks:
- Read the official album credits in the liner notes or the streaming service’s credits section for that release.
- Look for session or recording documentation tied to the specific track, which will usually name the drummer and the date of recording.
- Separate live and studio claims. A tour appearance does not prove a studio credit, and a studio credit does not prove a tour role.
His status in 2026
The dated sources available for this profile run through February 2022. Nothing in them confirms that Rook is on MGK’s current touring lineup in 2026. Avoid writing that he is currently touring with MGK unless a dated official announcement from MGK, the band, or Rook’s own verified channels says so. Check the artist’s official site and social accounts, and any recent tour listings, before stating a current role.

Quick reference
- Rook is the performing name of drummer JP (John) Cappelletty.
- He has been identified as Machine Gun Kelly’s drummer since at least 2017.
- His own account says the connection began with a call from MGK during his last high-school semester.
- Confirmed reporting runs through 2022; his 2026 status is unconfirmed.
- Studio credits must be checked release by release in official album credits.
The short answer is Rook, but the most accurate version of the answer is that he is documented as MGK’s drummer through 2022, and anything later needs a current, dated source.
