The 2023 film May December is fictional and draws on elements of their case; it is not a literal retelling. Letourneau’s later marriage to Fualaau does not change the criminal convictions or the teacher-student power imbalance.
Who was Mary Kay Letourneau?
Born Mary Katherine Schmitz, Letourneau was a married elementary school teacher and mother of four in the Seattle area. Fualaau was 12 and in her sixth-grade class when their sexual relationship began. The Washington Post reported that police found them together in a minivan at Des Moines Marina in June 1996. The relationship became public after Letourneau became pregnant.

Letourneau was arrested in 1997. She gave birth to a daughter, Audrey, in May that year, then pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree child rape. She was sentenced to 89 months in prison. Her initial release came with restrictions, including an order barring contact with Fualaau. She violated that order, her sentence was reinstated, and she gave birth to their second daughter, Georgia, while incarcerated. ABC News and The Washington Post recount the case and its legal history.
What happened to Vili Fualaau and Letourneau?
After Letourneau was released in 2004, Fualaau sought to overturn the no-contact order. They married in 2005. Fualaau filed for legal separation in 2017; later accounts place their separation in 2019. Letourneau died of colon cancer in July 2020, aged 58.

Fualaau later described the relationship in affectionate terms, but that does not alter the facts that he was a child and her student when the abuse began, or that Letourneau was convicted of child rape. The adult held authority over the child; the later marriage cannot retroactively make that relationship equal.
How closely does May December follow the case?
May December uses the case as inspiration but changes its people and events. Its fictional couple, Gracie and Joe, echo aspects of Letourneau and Fualaau’s story: an adult woman’s sexual relationship with a boy, public scrutiny, children, and a later life together. But Joe and Gracie meet through a pet shop, not as teacher and student. The film also changes names, location, family details, and other circumstances. TIME’s comparison of the film and case details those differences.

Screenwriter Samy Burch described the case as a “jumping off point” and said, “it was important to me that this wasn’t the Mary Kay Letourneau story.” Director Todd Haynes acknowledged the case’s influence, saying the filmmakers learned from examining the relationship. Their comments describe the film’s creative approach; they do not make it a factual account.

Fualaau said the filmmakers did not contact him and criticized the project’s treatment of his experience. In a statement reported by The Guardian in January 2024, he said: “I’m offended by the entire project and the lack of respect given to me – who lived through a real story and is still living it.” That is Fualaau’s assessment of the film and its production, rather than an independently established finding about the filmmakers’ intentions.
