James Gilbey is the man British tabloids named in 1992 as the male friend speaking with Diana, Princess of Wales, on a leaked telephone recording generally dated to New Year’s Eve 1989. At the time, UPI reported that he was a marketing consultant and a distant relative of the Gilbey gin family. Those are press descriptions from the early 1990s. The reporting available does not establish a full biography or what he does today.

What the press said about him

The earliest detailed identification comes from a United Press International report dated August 26, 1992, headlined “Diana’s telephone confidante named.” UPI said London tabloids had named Gilbey and attributed his occupation and family connection to newspaper reporting, not to any statement from Gilbey himself. Treat both details as claims made in that period rather than verified facts about his life since.

Two points are easy to overstate. First, “marketing consultant” is a reported occupation from 1992, not a confirmed description of his current work. Second, the “distant relative of the Gilbey gin family” link does not make him a gin heir; the report does not say he had any role in the company or any inheritance.

How the recording surfaced

The sequence below is assembled from contemporary reporting and later coverage. Each row shows the source that supports it, so the dates can be checked against the reporting itself.

Date What was reported Source
New Year’s Eve 1989 The call is generally understood to have taken place while Diana was at Sandringham and Gilbey was speaking on a mobile phone. This timing comes from retrospective and contemporary accounts. UPI, 1992; later retrospective reporting
1992 A couple who said they had intercepted and taped the conversation took it to The Sun, having become convinced that one voice was Diana’s. London tabloids then named Gilbey in connection with the recording. UPI, August 26, 1992
January 1993 The Independent described the “Squidgy” nickname used in the call and explained why mobile-phone interception drew public attention. The Independent, “Bugging: Can you hear me? Yes, darling, and so can an awful lot of other people,” January 16, 1993
February 2008 Coverage of evidence at the inquest into Diana’s death revisited the recording. The Guardian reported that its maker had never been proved, and that the recording had been taken to be the work of an amateur radio enthusiast. The Guardian, “Queen’s ex-private secretary denies role in Diana death,” February 12, 2008

The recording became known as “Squidgygate,” after the nickname used for Diana in the call. The name stuck because it made the tape easy to discuss, not because it established anything about the speakers.

How to describe the relationship

The recording contains affectionate language, and the press treated Gilbey as a close friend. The accounts reviewed do not establish the full nature of the relationship, or how long it lasted, and a single recorded call cannot settle that question.

A Los Angeles Times feature published May 8, 1994, under the headline “Building a Better Prince,” offered a cautious reading of the call. It wrote: “But the general context seems to be that of courtship confidants rather than lovers.” That is the newspaper’s assessment, not a statement from either speaker, so attribute it to the Los Angeles Times.

In practical terms, describe Gilbey as a reported friend or confidant of Diana. Avoid calling him her lover, and avoid presenting the tape as proof of any particular relationship.

What is not established

  • Who made the recording. Reporting on the 2008 inquest says the maker was never proved. No named person, agency, or amateur enthusiast has been confirmed as the one who recorded or leaked the call.
  • His current occupation or public activity. The sources from 1992 to 2008 do not describe his life after the recording became public.
  • A statement from Gilbey about the call. No verified, verbatim comment from him about the conversation appears in the reporting reviewed.
  • Reliable figures. No audience, polling, or financial statistics tied to the story are established by these sources, so none should be quoted.

Read against this list, the 1992 identification and the 2008 inquest coverage are the two solid anchors. Everything about his background comes from press reports of that era.

Each of these pieces is dated and written for the reporting of its own time. Read together, they show how a private call became a public story, and where the evidence stops.
