Hugh Hammer is a King’s Landing blacksmith in House of the Dragon Season 2, played by Kieran Bew. He first appears as a working man trying to get paid for weapons made for the war; Episode 7 reveals his Targaryen family connection and shows him claiming the dragon Vermithor.

Why Hugh speaks up in King’s Landing

Hugh’s story begins with the cost of war for ordinary people. The city’s blacksmiths have been making weapons, but they have not been paid. Hugh petitions King Aegon on their behalf, pressing for the wages his fellow workers are owed. Sky’s Episode 5 guide notes that the series had not formally named him at that point, though the character was identifiable as Hugh Hammer from the books: Sky’s Season 2 Episode 5 guide.

The official character description frames the dispute as personal as well as economic: Hugh is trying to provide for his sick daughter. With the blockade worsening conditions in King’s Landing, the war threatens his household’s ability to get by. The Warner Bros. Discovery character descriptions identify him as a blacksmith struggling to make ends meet for his child.

What Episode 7 reveals about Hugh

His Targaryen connection

Episode 7 reveals that Hugh’s mother was the sister of Baelon Targaryen, the father of Viserys and Daemon. Sky’s episode explainer says she had worked at a pleasure house before Hugh was born; Hugh resents her choices. The revelation makes him part of the extended Targaryen family and helps explain why he can be considered among the potential dragonriders. Read Sky’s Season 2 Episode 7 explainer for its account of the reveal.

How he claims Vermithor

In the same episode, Rhaenyra’s search for dragonriders brings Hugh into the cave where Vermithor is waiting. As other would-be riders flee, Hugh stands his ground and survives the encounter; Vermithor accepts him. Showrunner Ryan Condal described the choice as an act that could be read as “incredibly brave or stupid,” saying Hugh dares the dragon to take him down. Bew connected the character’s anger to Vermithor’s epithet, “The Bronze Fury”: “I think that’s really fitting for Hugh. He’s quite angry inside.” Both comments appear in Sky’s Episode 7 explainer.

How the show’s Hugh differs from the book character

Fire & Blood, George R. R. Martin’s history of the Targaryen civil war, gives Hugh a different emphasis than the television series. The show foregrounds his wife, sick daughter, unpaid work and newly disclosed maternal connection to the Targaryens. The book describes a blacksmith’s bastard and stresses his size, strength and use of a warhammer. The series has therefore made his family and financial hardship central to his introduction, rather than simply reproducing the book’s characterization.

Aspect Season 2 series Fire & Blood
Family and background A King’s Landing blacksmith with a wife and sick daughter; Episode 7 identifies his mother as Baelon Targaryen’s sister. Described as a blacksmith’s bastard; the cited account does not give the same on-screen family details.
Defining early pressures Trying to provide for his family and seeking payment for weapons made during wartime. Emphasis on his imposing physical strength and martial identity.
Dragon story Episode 7 shows him facing and claiming Vermithor. The book recounts the Dance-era dragonseeds; its later events are not all shown in Season 2.

The term dragonseed refers to people of Valyrian descent, often unrecognized or illegitimate descendants, who may be able to claim a dragon. It is a descriptive term, not a regional bastard surname. Book spoilers: what Season 2 has not established

Fire & Blood goes beyond Hugh’s Season 2 introduction and recounts later events in the Dance of the Dragons. Those developments belong to the book’s version of the story; Season 2 does not establish that the series will adapt them in the same way. Readers who want to compare the portrayals can consult Martin’s Fire & Blood, the source book for House of the Dragon.
