Kerstin Emhoff is a film and media producer and entrepreneur. She was married to Doug Emhoff beginning in 1992, and the couple had two children, Cole and Ella, before their marriage ended after 16 years. Today she is best understood through her own production companies, Prettybird and Ventureland, rather than only through her former marriage.

Who Kerstin Emhoff is

Kerstin Emhoff works in the media, arts and entertainment industry. She is associated with two companies: Prettybird, which Town & Country says she started in 2007, and Ventureland, which that same profile describes as a creative studio working with filmmakers, studios and brands. Inc.’s 2025 Female Founders 500 listing also places her at both companies. Her current executive titles at each company are not established in the sources reviewed, so this article describes her role as a founder and producer without assigning a specific title.

Marriage, children and divorce timeline

The public record on Kerstin and Doug Emhoff’s marriage is consistent on the start date and the children, but not on the year the marriage ended.

Date What the source says Source and date
1992 Doug and Kerstin Emhoff marry. Marie Claire (2020); Town & Country (2024)
Not stated They have two children, Cole and Ella. Marie Claire (2020)
After 16 years The marriage ends after 16 years, which implies a divorce around 2008. Marie Claire (2020)
2008 The couple divorces in this year. The Independent (2021)
2010 A conflicting divorce year. Town & Country (2024)

Because the outlets disagree, the safest statement is that the marriage lasted 16 years and ended in the late 2000s. If you need a single year for a citation, attribute it to the specific outlet that gives it, since The Independent’s 2008 and Town & Country’s 2010 cannot both be confirmed from the sources reviewed.

Her production career

Prettybird

Prettybird is the first company Town & Country attributes to her, founded in 2007. Inc. lists it among the companies that make up her current work, and the two profiles together describe it as the production side of her career.

Ventureland

Ventureland is described in Town & Country as a creative studio that works with filmmakers, studios and brands. Inc.’s 2025 profile describes the business as a hybrid production company that grew by producing commercials, and it names Ventureland as one of the two companies Kerstin Emhoff is associated with.

Credits and awards as Inc. describes them

Inc.’s 2025 founder profile says the company work included four Super Bowl commercials and projects that received Emmys, a Peabody Award and an Oscar nomination. Those awards are described as work produced by her companies, not as individual honours credited personally to Kerstin Emhoff. The Independent’s 2021 feature also mentions production credits, including a Nine Inch Nails music video and Beyoncé’s “Formation,” but that is secondary reporting and should be attributed to The Independent if cited.

A public example: the 2024 Democratic National Convention video

At the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Cole Emhoff introduced his father with a video about Doug Emhoff’s life, family and relationship with Kamala Harris. Kerstin Emhoff said she and Ventureland helped produce it, according to OPB/NPR’s 2024 convention coverage. It is the clearest documented example of her company’s work in a political setting.

Her relationship with Kamala Harris and the blended family

Kerstin Emhoff has spoken publicly about Kamala Harris as part of the family. In a 2024 statement reported by The Washington Post, she said Harris had acted as a co-parent with her and Doug for more than a decade:

“For over 10 years, since Cole and Ella were teenagers, Kamala has been a co-parent with Doug and I. She is loving, nurturing, fiercely protective, and always present. I love our blended family and am grateful to have her in it.”

Harris described the relationship in her memoir The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, as quoted by Town & Country: “I had—and have—tremendous admiration and respect for Kerstin. I could tell from the way Doug talked about his kids that she was a terrific mother—and in later months, as Kerstin and I got to know each other, we really hit it off ourselves and became friends.” The memoir is by Harris, not Kerstin Emhoff.

How she describes her own public identity

Kerstin Emhoff has said she does not want to be known only as Doug Emhoff’s former wife. The Independent reported her 2021 remark from an interview with Politico: “I don’t want to just be the famous ex-wife. I am accomplished in my own right.” That tension explains why the query focuses on her as a former spouse, while her own account and her company work put the emphasis on her career.

What the divorce record does and does not establish

In 2024, Doug Emhoff acknowledged an affair during the first marriage, according to a statement reported by The Washington Post. His statement said the couple went through tough times because of his actions. Kerstin Emhoff gave a different account of the end of the marriage in the same report:

“Doug and I decided to end our marriage for a variety of reasons, many years ago. He is a great father to our kids, continues to be a great friend to me and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala, and I have built together.”

The two statements should be presented side by side, each attributed to its speaker. Neither source establishes a single cause for the divorce, and this article does not reduce it to one.
