Gigi Perez is an American singer-songwriter whose online following grew around early songs such as “Sometimes (Backwood)” before a 2024 TikTok snippet helped propel “Sailor Song” to a much wider audience. The sapphic love song became her first UK No. 1, and her early success led to shows alongside Coldplay. Her debut album, At The Beach, In Every Life, followed in 2025.
Who is Gigi Perez?
Perez was born in New Jersey in February 2000 and is based in Florida, according to Official Charts. She is a singer-songwriter whose career developed through a mix of online discovery, independent releases and later mainstream chart success.
How TikTok helped bring “Sailor Song” to a wider audience
Before the breakout: “Sometimes (Backwood)”
“Sailor Song” was not Perez’s first online success. Official Charts and Universal Music Canada identify “Sometimes (Backwood)” as an earlier release that found an audience in 2021. Perez left Berklee College of Music during the pandemic, built an audience on TikTok and later released music independently after leaving her prior label, according to Universal Music Canada’s 2025 biography.
That biography reported 145 million Spotify streams for “Sometimes (Backwood)” as of its 2025 publication. It is a label-reported figure, not a current independently verified stream count.

The 2024 rise of “Sailor Song”
An unreleased snippet of “Sailor Song” spread on TikTok in 2024 before the full track came out. The song then climbed the UK chart, reached the Top 10 in October and hit No. 1 on November 1, 2024, according to Official Charts. Official Charts’ artist chart page records a peak of No. 1 and one week at the top; chart totals can change as the database updates.
Universal Music Canada reported in 2025 that more than 100,000 videos used “Sailor Song” upon release and that the track had passed 700 million Spotify streams. Those are dated label figures, not current totals. The available sources establish the sequence of TikTok attention and chart success, but do not measure how much of Perez’s career growth TikTok caused.

What is “Sailor Song” about?
Official Charts describes “Sailor Song” as a sapphic love story. After it reached No. 1 in the UK, Perez spoke to the publication about the importance of queer representation in mainstream music:
“There’s such a big hole in the conversations that we’re having in mainstream music. There’s an entire group of people – the queer community – who need representation. Knowing that Sailor Song is a vessel for that, it’s amazing. Thank you!”
