No one has been publicly identified or prosecuted for JonBenét Ramsey’s 1996 murder. Boulder police still classify the homicide as an open investigation and report continuing interviews, evidence collection, and testing. The public record does not give one definitive reason no arrest has followed; it shows a case with unresolved evidence and investigative details that authorities have not disclosed.
Is the JonBenét Ramsey case still open?
Yes. In its December 2025 update, Boulder Police said the homicide remains a top priority. The department reported conducting new interviews, revisiting people in response to tips, collecting evidence, and testing or retesting evidence. Chief Stephen Redfearn said, “This case remains a top priority for our department.” Boulder Police Department’s case page and December 2025 update

Police say the investigation began after six-year-old JonBenét was reported missing on December 26, 1996. She was found dead in her family’s home, and her death was ruled a homicide. Boulder Police’s December 2023 update
Why was the killer never caught?
The careful answer is that authorities have not publicly explained a single cause. Their updates describe ongoing efforts to develop leads and assess evidence, but do not publish a complete account of investigative obstacles, a definitive interpretation of all forensic results, or a final finding that identifies a perpetrator. The absence of those details is not proof that a particular lead failed, that DNA is useless, or that a particular person committed the crime.

Police have said they investigated multiple people as suspects, while limiting what they disclose to protect a possible future prosecution. The Associated Press reported that position in 2024; it does not establish who committed the murder or why no arrest has been made. Associated Press, November 27, 2024
What does the scale of the investigation show?
Police describe a large case file and years of investigative work. These dated counts describe different things and should not be collapsed into a single measure of progress or suspects:
| Date and source | Reported figure | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Boulder Police, May 1, 2022 | More than 21,016 | Tips, letters, and emails the department said it had followed by that date. |
| Boulder Police maintained case page, current summary accessed in 2026 | More than 1,000 individuals across 19 states | People contacted or interviewed cumulatively; this is not a count of suspects. |
| Boulder Police, December 2023 | More than 21,000 tips; over 1,000 interviews across 17 states and two foreign countries; samples from more than 200 individuals | Separate counts reported in the 2023 update. Its interview count and geographic scope differ from the maintained case-page summary. |
| Boulder Police, December 2023 | Nearly 2,500 evidence items, roughly 40,000 reports, and more than one million pages | Contents and documentation of the digitized case file described by police. |
| Boulder Police reporting Colorado Bureau of Investigation figures, May 2022 | More than 750 reference samples updated | A historical count reported for that time, not a current total. |
In 2023, police also said the Colorado Cold Case Review Team had reviewed the case, a searchable digital database had been assembled, and investigators had made a fresh evidence inventory. The department withheld the review’s specific recommendations, saying disclosure could compromise the investigation. Boulder Police, December 28, 2023

DNA remains part of the investigation, but the public statements do not identify the killer through DNA. Boulder Police said prior testing had been conducted and that remaining samples were being assessed for methods that are proven and validated for the material available. The department said evidence was preserved and prepared for testing when possible; it did not publish every sample, result, or interpretation, or promise that additional testing would solve the case. District Attorney Michael Dougherty put the evidentiary limit this way: “Whether it is DNA or other evidence, more is needed to solve this murder.” Boulder Police case-page statement
What did the 1998 grand-jury request mean?
In May 1998, Boulder Police asked the district attorney to convene a grand jury. The department’s stated reasons were procedural: a grand jury could compel sworn testimony, obtain evidence not otherwise available through routine methods, and consider whether an indictment should be sought. The request documents an investigative step at that time; it is not evidence that any particular person committed the homicide. Boulder Police, Ramsey Case New Release Index
What can and can’t be concluded about suspects?
Former Boulder County District Attorney Mary Lacy cleared John, Patsy, and Burke Ramsey in 2008 based on DNA evidence from JonBenét’s clothing that she interpreted as pointing to an “unexplained third party,” according to the Associated Press. That was Lacy’s action and interpretation; it did not name a killer or establish that the case was solved. Associated Press, November 27, 2024
The available public statements do not establish a named perpetrator, motive, or definitive account of the crime. Nor do they establish that one particular early investigative error caused the absence of an arrest. Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said in 2023, “We will continue to pursue all leads and explore technology advancements to identify JonBenet’s killer.” Boulder Police, December 2023
