The most detailed account of the relationship comes from Vanity Fair’s 2016 profile of Banks, which says she met Handelman on her first day of freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania, in 1992, and that the two married in 2003. Biography.com gives the same marriage year in an entry last updated in 2020. Both sources are secondary profiles, so the timeline is best attributed to them rather than presented as the couple’s own telling.
Brownstone Productions: a marriage and a business
The couple’s partnership is professional as well as personal. Hulu’s official biography of Banks says she co-owns Brownstone Productions with her husband, and describes the company as best known for producing the Pitch Perfect franchise. The Television Academy’s biography of Banks identifies Handelman as her husband and says the two produced Pitch Perfect through Brownstone. Elle’s 2026 interview reports that they launched the company together.
Banks has described the logic of working together in terms of the relationship itself. In Vanity Fair she said:

Max Handelman’s background
Elle’s 2025 profile, Who Is Max Handelman?, describes him as having studied communications at the University of Pennsylvania, worked in investment banking, earned an MBA at UCLA, and worked as a sportswriter. These career details appear in that profile only. The official biographies of Banks cover his connection to her and to Brownstone, not a full career history, so readers should treat the education and early-career details as Elle’s reporting.
