TRON: Ares is part of the same film saga and expands on the earlier movies, but its story is centered on a different conflict rather than being described as a direct continuation of TRON: Legacy’s central character arc. That makes “new story in the established TRON universe” the clearest way to describe it—not a claim that the earlier film is erased or ignored.
Is TRON: Ares a sequel to TRON: Legacy?
Yes, in the broad sense that it is the newest chapter in the TRON saga. Disney describes TRON: Ares as expanding on both the 1982 TRON and 2010’s TRON: Legacy. But the official descriptions do not characterize it as a direct continuation of Legacy’s protagonist arc. “Not a direct Legacy sequel” is a useful description of its story structure, not Disney’s quoted classification.
The distinction matters because “sequel” can mean either a later film in a franchise or a plot that directly picks up a previous film’s central storyline. Ares is the former; its published premise gives it a different story center. Disney’s film page and its production notes establish the franchise connection without saying prior events or characters have been discarded.
What is Ares about instead?
Disney’s production framing focuses on the collision of the digital and real worlds, and asks “what it means to be human” when those worlds meet. That premise shifts the immediate focus to a new conflict involving the digital realm and the world beyond it, rather than presenting the film as a continuation of Legacy’s main character journey.

- Get ready for the electrifying action and adventure of “Tron: Ares.” When a highly sophisticated Program named Ares is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, it marks humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
This is a change in emphasis, not evidence that the Grid or the earlier films’ events no longer matter. Disney calls Ares an expansion of the franchise; the available official descriptions do not claim that it contradicts or resets the previous story.
How do the cast and creative credits signal a new story?
Ares has a new principal cast led by Jared Leto, Greta Lee and Evan Peters, alongside Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson and Jeff Bridges. Joachim Rønning directs. Disney’s film page lists these credits as part of the new film’s identity.

The production notes credit Jesse Wigutow with the screenplay and David DiGilio and Wigutow with the story, based on characters created by Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird. Those credits show a distinct writing team working with the franchise’s established characters. They do not, by themselves, establish why Disney chose this direction or prove that the film is disconnected from Legacy.
Why does the music sound different from Legacy?
TRON: Legacy is strongly associated with its Daft Punk score. Disney announced an original motion-picture soundtrack for Ares by Nine Inch Nails, giving the new film a different musical identity as well as a different story focus. That change is a creative distinction, not evidence about continuity.

Director Joachim Rønning acknowledged the challenge of following the earlier score in a D23 interview: “Obviously, Daft Punk’s score [for 2010’s TRON: Legacy] was so iconic and legendary—and very, very hard, if not impossible, to top.” D23’s interview with Rønning captures his perspective; the statement does not suggest that the films are unrelated.
