CBS News and the Associated Press reported in June 2009 that the couple had married in 2004 and had announced their split. The marriage is a footnote to her public career, which centers on food writing, Food Network hosting, cookbooks and a podcast.
Billy Joel’s marriages in order
Joel’s marriage to Katie Lee was his third. The CBS News/AP report from June 17, 2009 places her after his first wife, Elizabeth Weber, and his second, Christie Brinkley. The report does not give dates for the earlier marriages, so this article does not either.
Marriage and separation timeline
| Event | Date as reported | Source and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage to Katie Lee | 2004 (month not stated) | CBS News/AP, June 17, 2009 |
| Split confirmed and announced | June 2009 | CBS News/AP, June 17, 2009 |
| Divorce finalized | Not stated | The 2009 report does not establish a divorce date, and none of the sources reviewed for this article does either. |
Because no source establishes a divorce date, “separation” and “split” are the accurate terms for the 2009 announcement. Readers should not treat the announcement as a finalized divorce.
How the couple described the split
In a joint statement, as reported by CBS News/AP, the couple said they remained “caring friends with admiration and respect for each other.” That wording comes from the joint statement, not from an interview. The report does not give reasons for the split, and no other source reviewed here does either, so this article does not offer any.

Who Katie Lee Biegel is today
Katie Lee and Katie Lee Biegel are the same person. Food Network’s February 5, 2026 biography uses the full married name. Her own website, Katie Lee Kitchen, also uses it. Her early work, from her college years through her first television roles, was published under Lee.
Education and early path
Food Network says Biegel studied food science and journalism at Miami University and graduated in 2003 with degrees in journalism and English. She describes the moment she decided to write about food in her own words:

“I was in college, and it was around the time that food was really becoming part of pop culture. I was reading Gourmet, I was reading Bon Appétit, and Food & Wine, and starting to watch Food on TV as well. I was a journalism major, and I thought, ‘Well, what if I could write about food?'”
The quote appears in Food Network’s biography, which attributes it to an interview with Kerry Diamond on the Cherry Bombe podcast.

Television: The Kitchen and Food Network
Food Network describes Biegel as an Emmy-nominated host, chef, author and podcaster. She became an original co-host of The Kitchen in 2014, and the biography lists later Food Network hosting and judging work. Her television career began with that role and is separate from her marriage to Joel.
Cookbooks, a novel, and a podcast
- Cookbooks: Food Network names It’s Not Complicated: Simple Recipes for Every Day and Katie Lee’s Easy-Breezy Eats: The Endless Summer Cookbook. Those are the clearest starting points for her written work.
- Novel: The biography also lists Groundswell among her books.
- Podcast: Her website describes All on the Table with Katie Lee Biegel, a weekly podcast.
- Wine venture: Her website says she co-founded Kind of Wild Wines in 2023.
Details that change over time
Food Network says Biegel splits her time between New York City and the Hamptons with her husband, Ryan Biegel, their daughter, Iris, and a rescue dog. Her website describes her current podcast and wine business. Family details and current business roles can change, so check her official site or Food Network’s current biography before relying on them.
