Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s wife is Sam Taylor-Johnson, a British filmmaker and visual artist who worked under the name Sam Taylor-Wood before her marriage. The two met through Nowhere Boy, Sam’s feature directing debut, in which Aaron played the teenage John Lennon. Published profiles report that they married in 2012.
Who Sam Taylor-Johnson is
Sam Taylor-Johnson is a film director and fine-art photographer and video artist. The 2024 Guardian profile says she began in photography and video art and studied at Goldsmiths, and TIME’s 2024 interview likewise describes her as a fine-art photographer turned director. How Aaron and Sam met
Aaron Taylor-Johnson was cast as the young John Lennon in Nowhere Boy, which Sam directed. The Guardian reports that Sam met him when he was cast, at age 18, in early 2009. The film’s London Film Festival premiere in October 2009 is the point at which the Guardian says the couple were engaged. If you want to see the film that brought them together, check current DVD and streaming listings, since availability varies by region and changes over time.

Engagement, children and marriage
The published timeline is short. The table below separates what each source states from the points where the profiles overlap.
| Event | Reported timing | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Aaron cast in Nowhere Boy | Early 2009 | The Guardian (2024) |
| Engagement, reported at the film’s premiere | October 2009, London Film Festival | The Guardian (2024) |
| First child | 2010 | The Guardian (2024) |
| Marriage | 2012 | The Guardian (2024) and Esquire (2023) |
Esquire’s 2023 profile also reports that the couple took each other’s surnames on marriage. Neither source gives a precise wedding date, so this article does not give one.
The age gap, and why the figures differ
Sam and Aaron are about 23 years apart in age. The two profiles disagree by one year on Sam’s age when they met, as the table shows.
| Source | Sam’s age when they met | Aaron’s age when they met |
|---|---|---|
| The Guardian (2024) | 42 | 18 |
| Esquire (2023) | 41 | 18 |
The gap is the same under either figure. Use the approximate wording “about 23 years”, and attribute any exact age to the publication that gives it.

Their family
The Guardian describes Sam as the mother of four daughters: two from her previous marriage to art dealer Jay Jopling, and two with Aaron. Esquire describes Aaron and Sam as coparents to the four girls. The profiles do not list the children’s names, and this article does not list ages, which change with each year.
What they have said publicly
Sam on the age gap (The Guardian, 2024)
Asked whether the age difference shows up in their daily life, Sam said: “No, it never does. I mean, it’s coming up now because you’re asking.” Later in the interview she said: “Aaron and I are a bit of an anomaly, but it’s that thing: after 14 years you just think, surely by now it doesn’t matter?” She framed the attention as coming from outsiders who do not know them.
Rank #4
Sam on public judgment (TIME, 2024)
Sam told TIME: “There are times when I feel the lens of the gaze and people’s judgement but I just have to very quickly switch it off.” She also described her everyday life as centred on Aaron and the children, including school runs. These are her own accounts, not independent findings about the relationship.
Aaron on privacy (Esquire, 2023)
Aaron told Esquire: “I’ve got really nothing to hide, and I’m secure in what we have. But I’m not going to unlock things that are actually precious to me.”

What these sources do and do not establish
The timeline and family details come from published profiles from 2023 and 2024, not from an official marriage record. The profiles are the most recent published reporting this article relies on, so any change in the couple’s circumstances since then is not covered. Treat the 2009 to 2012 dates as the reported timeline, and the age figures as approximate.
Sam’s own statements are useful for understanding how she describes the attention she receives. They are not a substitute for reporting on the private relationship, which the sources do not claim to provide.
