BC Jean is a singer-songwriter who co-wrote “If I Were a Boy” with producer-songwriter Toby Gad. Beyoncé recorded the song for her 2008 album I Am… Sasha Fierce, which brought Jean’s writing to a far larger audience than her own work had reached. Jean later performed and wrote with Mark Ballas as the duo Alexander Jean. Public coverage from 2015 is the most recent detailed career profile available, so this article separates what is documented from what cannot be confirmed about her work today.
Who BC Jean is
The Recording Academy describes Jean as a singer-songwriter born in San Diego. It names Alanis Morissette, No Doubt, Queen and Rod Stewart among the influences she has drawn on in her writing. Her public profile rests on songwriting rather than on a solo recording career, which is why her name is most often found in credits rather than on the front of an album.
How “If I Were a Boy” was written
The clearest account of the song’s origin comes from Jean herself, in an interview published by Songwriting Magazine. It describes a writing session in New York with Toby Gad. Jean recalls making an offhand remark about wishing she were a boy. Gad encouraged her to sing the idea, and the session became a kind of therapy or diary entry rather than a conventional craft exercise. Jean also says the demo recorded that day is the one Beyoncé later heard.
This is Jean’s recollection, not independently documented studio history. No session log or contemporaneous report in the material reviewed confirms the details, so treat the story as the songwriters’ own account of how the idea arrived.

Beyoncé’s recording and the album
The Recording Academy credits Jean and Gad as co-writers of Beyoncé’s “If I Were a Boy,” included on I Am… Sasha Fierce, released in 2008. The song is the track most listeners associate with the album’s emotional center, and it is the reason Jean’s name circulates beyond songwriting circles.
Two points are easy to blur. Beyoncé is the recording artist; Jean and Gad are the writers. The album is Beyoncé’s, not a BC Jean release, and listeners looking for the song on a physical format will find it on the standard album, which Amazon’s catalog lists as an audio CD.

Recognition for the song and album
Jean told the Recording Academy that seeing Beyoncé perform the song on the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards telecast in 2010 was an extraordinary personal moment:
“There are not words to describe the feeling. It’s unreal and it’s probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

A 2014 Recording Academy article identified I Am… Sasha Fierce as a GRAMMY-nominated Album of the Year. That is the album-level recognition documented in the sources; it does not by itself establish individual awards for the song.
Chart history, as reported in 2015
The Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) profile from 2015 reported the song’s chart placements. These figures are attributed to NSAI and were not checked against Billboard’s own chart pages for this article.

NSAI’s November 30, 2015 interview identifies Jean and Mark Ballas as the duo Alexander Jean and describes the two writing and performing together. The same interview contains Jean’s own account of her early development:

- Piano lessons began at age four.
- She wrote poetry from age six.
- Her first song was written by age twelve.
These are personal-history details as Jean told them to NSAI; they were not independently verified against school or family records.
In her own words from the same interview: “Since my earliest of memories I have always had a love for music and writing. I began piano lessons at 4, writing poetry at 6, and wrote my first song by 12.”
What cannot be confirmed today
The coverage available for this article does not document BC Jean’s activity in 2026. The most recent detailed career interview is NSAI’s from 2015, and nothing in the material reviewed establishes current projects, recent releases, touring, or income. Anyone citing her as currently active in music should find a dated source for that claim. Otherwise, the accurate description is that she is a songwriter best known for co-writing a 2008 hit that Beyoncé recorded, and for a career with Mark Ballas that is documented up to 2015.
Readers researching the song itself can start with the Recording Academy’s coverage of the 2010 telecast and the album’s nomination, and with NSAI’s 2015 profile for the chart history and Jean’s own background.
