The film reveals that the mild-mannered Bob is connected to the Sentry, a powerful hero created through a secret experiment. The fuller story, including his dark alter ego, is a spoiler, so read the sections below marked as spoilers only if you want the reveal in advance.
Who Bob is at the trailer stage
In the trailer, Bob appears as a quiet, unassuming figure drawn into the film’s wider story. Disney’s official interview with Lewis Pullman identifies the character as “Robert Reynolds, aka Bob,” and that name is the one to know going into the film. Pullman plays him as a man whose outward gentleness hides a much larger and more dangerous identity.

Is Bob the Sentry?
Yes. The film ties Bob to the Sentry, a Marvel hero with godlike power. Because this connection is the main twist of Bob’s storyline, the rest of this article goes further into how it happens.
Spoilers: how Bob becomes the Sentry
Spoiler warning: the details in this section and the next come from Disney’s post-release interview, which itself carries a spoiler warning.
#1 Best Overall
- After being ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes assembles and embarks on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will the group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and prevail?
The secret Super-Soldier experiment
According to Disney’s account, Bob’s transformation comes from an illicit Super-Soldier experiment orchestrated by CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Disney says the experiment gives Bob godlike powers, and Valentina rebrands him as the Sentry. The sequence is the origin point for everything else about the character in this film.
The Void as Bob’s dark side
Disney describes the Void as Bob’s dark side, one that manifests as a deadly alter ego. The character therefore has two faces in the film: the Sentry, with his power and public identity, and the Void, the darker persona that emerges from the same person. Both are described as parts of one character, not separate people.
Rank #2
- Can this disparate group of antiheroes overcome their difficult pasts and form a real team capable of stopping the Void and saving the world?
How Pullman approached the personas
Pullman has spoken about the challenge of playing all of these facets. In Disney’s May 8, 2025 interview, he said:
“We were always very clear on the fact that we couldn’t have them be so separate that you could root for one and not for the others — that the audience understood that these were all derivatives of the same spirit and of the same person.”

That approach explains why the film keeps the character’s personas connected instead of treating the Void as a different villain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you want the comics background
The film’s Sentry draws on Marvel comics, but you do not need to read any comics to follow the movie. If you want the source material, Marvel’s official catalog lists two trade paperbacks featuring the character. Note that the catalog listings confirm the existence and bibliographic details of these editions, not that the film adapts either one directly.
Rank #4
| Edition | Writer | Character listed | Collected issues |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Sentry (trade paperback) | Paul Jenkins | Sentry (Robert Reynolds) | Not stated in the Marvel listing consulted |
| Sentry: Reborn (trade paperback) | Paul Jenkins | Sentry (Robert Reynolds) | Sentry (2005) #1–8 |
Choose The Sentry if you want the original character-focused run, and Sentry: Reborn if you want the defined run of issues 1 through 8 from the 2005 series. Comic-book versions of the character and the film’s on-screen version are not identical, so treat the comics as background rather than a preview.
