The album’s label description names baile funk among its influences, and MU540 appears in its producer credits; the available credit listing does not identify which track he produced.
Who is Amaarae?
GRAMMY.com describes Amaarae as Ghanaian-American. In an interview published August 4, 2025, she explained that Ghana comes first in how she thinks about identity, while the music also draws on the places she has been and remains rooted in home. Her sense of identity is not a single influence or genre: it is part of how she connects her music to Ghana and to wider Black cultural histories. Read the GRAMMY.com interview.
What does Black Star mean?
Amaarae said she chose the album title after returning to Ghana and feeling that her relationship with home had changed. She also associated it with Ghana’s national symbol and the global legacy of Black artistry. The title therefore carries personal and cultural meanings rather than pointing to only one idea. In her GRAMMY.com interview, she described the change she felt after going home.
What does Black Star sound like?
Released August 8, 2025, Black Star is Amaarae’s third full-length album. The label describes its sound as a changing mix of ghettotech, house, techno, baile funk and African dance genres. GRAMMY.com places the album in conversation with dance music’s diasporic roots, while Amaarae has described it as more experimental and resistant to predictable narratives about African pop. Interscope’s announcement gives the label’s description.
