Separation and divorce are two separate dates
Readers often treat the 2017 announcement as the end of the marriage. It was the public disclosure of a separation that had already happened. In the joint statement reported by ABC News on September 14, 2017, the couple wrote: “With absolute love and respect we decided to separate as a couple earlier this year.” They added: “We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family.”

The legal end came later. Entertainment Tonight’s 2023 report describes the couple filing for divorce and finalizing it in 2019, about two years after the separation. Those are two different events and should not be combined into a single “split year.”
Why the marriage ended: what is and is not established
No source establishes a confirmed single cause. The most specific account comes from Duhamel, who told Entertainment Tonight that he and Fergie had different interests and had “kind of outgrow[n] each other.” He also said he wanted to return to North Dakota. That is his account of the relationship, not a joint explanation from both of them.

CBS Los Angeles mentioned career scheduling as a factor in the separation, but did not establish it as a cause. Infidelity, blame, and the private lives of either partner are not documented in the reporting and should not be inferred from the timeline.
Co-parenting since the split
The couple has kept a cooperative arrangement for their son. Speaking on The Talk, as reported by CBS News on October 26, 2017, Fergie said: “Everything basically is staying the same, except we’re not a romantic couple … We are just making it happen.”

In a 2023 interview reported by Entertainment Tonight on October 5, 2023, Duhamel described the arrangement this way: “I think we both agree that we’re very different and we made an awesome kid. We get along great and we get to raise him without any acrimony.” Public comments from both have stayed consistent in describing the co-parenting as positive, with no new reporting on the relationship itself.

The documented answer to “who has Fergie dated” is Josh Duhamel: the 2004 meeting, the 2007 engagement, the 2009 marriage, the 2017 separation, and the 2019 divorce. Any other name would need its own attributable reporting before it could be presented as part of her relationship history.
