James has four brothers: Brian, Matt, Sean, and Patrick. The phrase has other uses, but in entertainment coverage it nearly always points to this family. The five brothers were born in St. Louis, and James, the eldest, was born in 1966.

Brian Gunn: screenwriter
Brian Gunn is a screenwriter who often worked with his cousin Mark Gunn. PEOPLE lists their joint credits as Bring It On Again (2004), Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012), and Brightburn (2019).
Matt Gunn: television writer
Matt Gunn is a television writer. According to PEOPLE, he worked on Real Time with Bill Maher from 2006 to 2022. The same profile reports nine Writers Guild Award nominations and five Emmy nominations for his writing. Those totals are the figures PEOPLE gave in 2024, not a count updated for later years.

Sean Gunn: actor
Sean Gunn is an actor known for his role on Gilmore Girls and for playing Kraglin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is the brother who has worked most often with James on screen. PEOPLE reported in 2024 that he would return for James’s Superman reboot, which was then slated for 2025. This article does not confirm his final role in that film.
Patrick Gunn: entertainment executive
Patrick Gunn works behind the scenes in entertainment. PEOPLE describes him as an executive vice president at Artisan Entertainment. The same 2024 article says he later worked for Qualia Capital. That is a dated report, so treat it as his affiliation at the time of publication, not as a current job.

Home movies as children
The brothers started making films together while they were still kids in St. Louis. In a St. Louis Magazine interview from 2007, James Gunn said: “I started making films when I was 11 or 12 years old.”
He also described the earliest of those projects: “The first—a clear precursor to things to come—was a Super 8 zombie film that starred the Gunn brothers, who all now work in the entertainment industry.” PEOPLE later reported that James recruited his brothers for a homemade zombie movie when he was 12. Both accounts describe the same early habit: the brothers were performing and making films together long before their professional careers began.
How the brothers have worked together
The clearest early professional collaboration was Tromeo and Juliet. PEOPLE says James helped co-write the film and Sean appeared in it as an actor.
Sean’s later work with James continued in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and The Suicide Squad. Brian and Matt have not been reported as regular contributors to James’s major studio projects in the sources used here, so the documented on-screen and creative partnership is primarily between James and Sean.
