Leaked Movie Screeners Are Rare Now, but Piracy Is Far From Over

Awards screener leaks have fallen sharply, yet they returned in 2025 and piracy continues through other routes. Here is what the figures do and do not show.

Leaked awards screeners have become rare, but they have not disappeared. Oscar tracking reported that the number of leaked screeners for nominated films fell sharply after 2021, with none leaking before the 2022 awards, and screeners leaked again in early 2025. The decline is real, but it does not mean movie piracy has ended. Industry groups still describe unauthorized distribution through other routes, and the screener trend tells you little about those.

What “screener leak” means here

A screener is a copy of a film sent to voters or members of an awards body so they can watch it before the ceremony. A screener leak is one of those copies, or a copy made from one, appearing publicly outside the authorized channel. That is a narrower thing than piracy in general. Piracy also includes unauthorized streaming, file downloads, and sites that link to pirated video. The leak counts reported in awards coverage measure only the first category, so a drop in them describes that category alone.

The counts, season by season

The figures below come from TorrentFreak’s reporting on Andy Baio’s Oscar tracking, plus one later TorrentFreak report on the 2025 season. Each count carries its own year and scope, and they should not be merged into one trend line.

Awards season or report Reported finding Scope and limits
Nominated films analysed in TorrentFreak, March 26, 2021 Three leaked screeners Based on Oscar tracking. Excludes the foreign-film and documentary categories.
2022 awards season, TorrentFreak, December 29, 2022 No screener for a nominated film leaked before the awards One season only. The report does not claim screeners can no longer leak.
2025 awards season, TorrentFreak, January 27, 2025 Oscar-nominated screeners leaked online again The source describes the return of leaks; a count is not stated in the reporting.

The exclusion of documentaries matters for this site’s readers. The 2021 tally says nothing about documentary screeners, and the tracking figures do not establish how often documentary screeners leak in any season. A documentary-specific claim would need its own source.

Why leaks became less common

Coverage points to several overlapping changes. Reporting does not isolate how much each one contributed, so treat the list as a set of explanations rather than a proven cause:

  • Fewer physical copies. Fewer awards screeners are distributed as discs, which reduces the number of copies that can escape.
  • Shorter release windows. The gap between a film’s theatrical run and its home availability has narrowed, so a screener matters less as a way to see the film before it is widely available.
  • Online premieres. Films that arrive on streaming services at or near release reduce the appeal of a leaked pre-release copy.
  • Disruption to a release group. TorrentFreak’s 2022 account names the collapse of a release group associated with leaks as one factor.

The shift changes what a fair comparison looks like. When you compare leak events across years, match the type of copy (physical or online) and how close the leak was to the film’s legal home release. Comparing an awards-screener count with total piracy volume tells you nothing about either.

What the Television Academy’s rules say

The Television Academy, which runs the Emmy Awards, published a member notice on January 15, 2022, titled “Reminder: FYC online screeners, DVDs, and Privacy.” It describes the Academy’s own program as it stood that year: members were receiving For Your Consideration (FYC) DVDs and could watch online screeners through the Academy’s own viewing site. These are television rules, not the Oscar process, and they describe one body’s practice in 2022 rather than a universal standard across studios or awards bodies.

The notice treats the material as copyrighted and loaned under a limited license for a member’s personal consideration during the awards season. Members may not sell or distribute the screeners. In the notice’s words: “Screeners are for your personal use only.”

Why unofficial screener sites carry personal risk

The same notice warns about sites that are not affiliated with or sanctioned by the Academy. In its words: “If you view FYC screeners on sites that are not affiliated with nor officially sanctioned by the Television Academy, you may be asked to provide personal information which may or may not become a part of the owner’s database.” Readers who see a pirated screener offered on a third-party site should treat any request for personal details as a reason to leave.

Piracy has moved to other routes

The Motion Picture Association, an industry trade group, describes ongoing anti-piracy work in its content-protection material. Its October 2, 2024 notorious markets filing describes unauthorized linking sites that embed third-party video players and make money through advertising or malware. Those sites do not depend on awards screeners at all, which is why a fall in screener leaks does not reduce their reach.

How to judge a claim about screener leaks

  • Check the year and whether the count covers one awards season or a long-running series.
  • Check whether the sample excludes any category, such as foreign-language or documentary films.
  • Check whether the claim is about physical screeners, online screeners, or piracy in general.
  • Be wary of “no leaks” statements that describe a single season and are presented as a permanent end.
  • Look for a stated mechanism. Industry explanations of why leaks fell are plausible but are not causal findings.

No source establishes a current worldwide screener-leak rate, and none proves the causes of the decline. Where a figure is missing, the article has not supplied one.
