In Japan it is a reciprocal gift occasion: people who received gifts on February 14 are traditionally expected to return something on March 14. Sweets are the most familiar choice, although flowers and other gifts are also documented. The custom grew out of confectionery-industry marketing in the late 1970s, though sources disagree about the exact first year and who started it.
When is White Day?
White Day is observed every year on March 14. Because it is tied to the calendar date rather than a weekday, it does not move. The Japan National Tourism Organization describes it as the day men return gifts to women who gave them chocolates on Valentine’s Day.
What is White Day?
White Day is a Japanese custom built around reciprocity. Valentine’s Day in Japan has long been a day when women give chocolate to men, and White Day is the counterpart on which the recipients respond. The conventional framing, as the Japan National Tourism Organization presents it, assigns the return gift to men and the original gift to women.
That gender pattern describes the traditional custom, not a rule that every person follows today. Many people exchange gifts with friends, colleagues, or partners regardless of who gave first, and the sources reviewed do not establish a current national rule about who must give what.

Why is White Day on March 14?
The date is simply one month after February 14. The Japan Post Network Shop account mentions a theory linking March 14 to an earlier historical date, but the sources reviewed do not independently substantiate that explanation, so it should be treated as an unconfirmed claim rather than the reason for the date.
Where did White Day come from?
The origin accounts agree on the broad picture: a late-1970s confectionery marketing push, followed by wider promotion by industry groups and retailers. They differ on the details.

- 1978, first celebration. The US Embassy’s Japan Information and Culture Center says White Day was first celebrated in 1978, and its handout also recounts the 1977 marshmallow promotion.
The most defensible summary is a late-1970s origin in confectionery promotion, with the first year and the initiating company reported differently by different sources. Readers who need a single date should cite the source they rely on rather than treating any one year as settled.
What do you give someone on White Day?
The sources document several gift types. Sweets have the strongest direct association with the occasion. Flowers, and in particular flowers with a greeting card, are a documented alternative with older survey support. The table below compares the options by what the sources actually establish.

Choosing a gift
- Choose confectionery when you want a familiar, easy return gift that fits almost any relationship.
- Choose flowers with a card when you want something more personal. The 1996 survey supports this as a well-received option, but it is a historical result.
- Adjust to the gift you received. The sources do not establish a universal price multiple or an obligation to reciprocate in a set way.
Is White Day celebrated outside Japan?
The sources reviewed document White Day as a Japanese custom. They do not establish a comparable, widely observed occasion elsewhere, so this article does not claim one exists.

- 269 valid responses (Japan-guide.com, 2000). The panel came from the site’s online pen-pal service and was self-selected. According to the source, 77% of respondents were female, 85% were single, and 71% were under 30.
- 45% of male participants said they celebrated White Day (Japan-guide.com, 2000). This describes that panel only, not Japanese men in general or current behavior.
- 56% of participants under 20 said they celebrated White Day (Japan-guide.com, 2000). The same sampling limits apply.
No recent, representative figure on participation, spending, or gift preference was established in the sources reviewed. Any statement about the size of the White Day market in Japan today would need a current, representative source that was not located here.
Readers who want to check the customs themselves can start with the Japan National Tourism Organization’s description of the day and the Nippon.com and Japan Post Network Shop accounts of its origin. The Web Japan article is the source for the 1996 flower survey, and the Japan-guide.com survey is the source for the 2000 panel figures.
