There is no proven, continuity-wide winner. DC calls the Flash “The Fastest Man Alive,” but that is DC’s character description—not the result of a race against Sonic. Sonic’s speed also changes across games and forms, and the available official sources do not establish a comparable, same-conditions matchup. To answer fairly, you have to name the versions, the kind of speed being compared, and which abilities count.
Why there is no definitive Sonic-versus-speedster ranking
“Speed” can mean a short burst, top speed, sustained travel, reaction time, or finishing a particular race. A character may excel at one and not another. Transformations, boosts, time travel, external power sources, and the course itself can also change the result.
There is a second problem: neither name refers to one unchanging portrayal. DC identifies Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, and Wally West as people who have held the Flash title. Their stories and abilities are not interchangeable. Sonic’s portrayal and game mechanics likewise vary by game and form.
Without specifying those details, a claim that one character is simply faster than the other blends different continuities and measures. The official sources available here do not establish a primary-source race between a defined Sonic incarnation and a defined Flash incarnation under shared conditions.

What DC’s “Fastest Man Alive” label establishes
DC’s official Flash profile describes the character as “The Fastest Man Alive” and lists super speed and time travel among the Flash’s powers. This supports calling the Flash an exceptionally fast character in DC stories. It does not demonstrate that every Flash is faster than every Sonic, or supply a neutral cross-franchise race result.
Even Flash stories need to be kept in context. DC’s Speed Force explainer describes changes in how the concept has been treated across comic continuity: the New 52 portrayed it as having always existed, while a 2016 series presented it as one of several Forces. Feats from different runs should not be combined as if they all describe one fixed version without noting the continuity.

What Sonic’s documented speed figures mean
Sonic’s games do not provide one universal, directly comparable top-speed measurement. The SEGA Sonic Origins Plus manual, for example, describes a special power that uses three Rings to grant a Super Speed Dash. That establishes a game mechanic; it does not state a universal speed in miles per hour or make the mechanic comparable to a comic-book feat.
Apple’s App Store feature “Just how fast is Sonic?” gives a figure of 767 mph and equates it with the speed of sound at 20 degrees Celsius. Treat that as Apple’s published feature figure, not as an independently verified statistic that applies across every Sonic game, form, or continuity. It is not a standardized measurement against a particular Flash.

How to make a fair comparison
- Name the versions. Specify which Flash—such as Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, or Wally West—and which Sonic portrayal, game, or form. Avoid mixing incompatible story continuities.
- Choose one speed measure. Decide whether the question is about acceleration, peak speed, sustained travel, reaction speed, or the winner of a defined race.
- Set the rules. State whether transformations, Ring-based boosts, other power sources, time travel, and special course conditions are allowed.
- Weigh the evidence. Keep an explicit number or depicted feat distinct from a character label, promotional feature, game mechanic, or fan interpretation.
Only after those choices can a comparison be argued on consistent terms. The sources cited here do not settle a specific Sonic-versus-Flash pairing under such a shared test.

Quicksilver and Dash Parr often appear in broad lists of fictional speedsters, and Hermes appears in some wider discussions. Their inclusion in a list is not evidence that they outrun Sonic. A defensible ranking would need to name each character’s version and compare primary-story evidence using the same speed measure and conditions. No such standardized comparison is established here.
